Do you have a gaming laptop?
If so, what do you use?
What are specs you look for in a laptop?

Gaming laptop general as well.

yup.
Technically two even: an older Asus ROG G60VX (core2duo 2Ghz [upgraded to 2.8ghz) + 4GB DDR2 + GTX 260M 1GB + W7 Pro), and a cheap "regular" laptop with decent specs (i3 @ 2.1ghz, 6GB DDR3, GT 540M 1GB, W7 Ultimate x64).

Both of them can run pre-2010 games flawlessly, and even some more modern games, like fucking MGS5, run decently at 720p/low.

>What are specs you look for in a laptop?
Same as on desktop PCs: All of them. For gaming use, however, a strong, dedicated GPU with its own memory is a must.
Yes, you can get a lot done with modern integrated video chips, but they're far from perfect choice.

Also, prepare for tons of post consisting

Fuck no, I used to have a gaming laptop and when that piece of shit had enough I built a PC like a sensible person.
>>
I'm getting a Dell Inspiron 15 7559 later this week.

Got it for less than $700 for it which is good, because spending anything more than that on a laptop is retarded since you might as well build a desktop at that point.

As someone who travels for work gaming laptops are nice, albeit overpriced.
>>

Buy an old laptop and get an external gpu
>>
I had a Lenovo Ideapad in college that I used for design/video editing, but it had a dedicated GPU and decent specs. I could run Dark Souls, Just Cause 2, CS:GO, and some other decent games on it on High. This was in 2012.

That thing got really damn hot though. I agree having a good gaming laptop with an HDMI out is awesome if you travel alot, which I did for work as well, but if that's not the case, just build a desktop.
>>
>>337691598
OP here. I do travel for work. I'm probably on the road 60% of the year. That's why I was looking for opinions. But I forgot this is /v/ where everyone just shitposts.

an old laptop probably won't have a proper interface for an external GPU
>>
>>337690931
the e-GPU thing is still at mere prototype levels, and there's no proper standards.

If anything, you could just get a refurbished higher-end ThinkPad, or even a "gaming laptop", and get a good enough system for traveling and light gaming.

In general, shelling over 1000 bucks to a laptop is quite silly, unless you seriously need a total "desktop replacement" machine.

>>337691874
I got a CoolerMaster's dual-fan pad for mere 15€ some 5 years ago.
>>
I use a laptop with a dedicated GPU for some soft vidja, full gaymen laptop would be too expensive and stupid.

It used to be able to run SFV at 60fps on low but the last patch fucked that so I'm slightly bitter.
Works for pretty much all last gen stuff though which is alright.

This monstrous piece of shit was unfortunately gifted to me by a friend. I was mad as fuck he didn't at least let me consult with him to make a mid tower which, for the price this fucking thing costed at the time, would have been a very powerful fucking desktop.

Can't wait to be rid of it by the end of June. Nearly 10 fucking pounds for an extremely loud laptop that can't even OC correctly, and can't even play games from 2008. And this piece of shit was made in 2012.

Never buy a gaming laptop. Ever. They don't last, they never perform as advertised, their CPUs are a bold faced lie to trick you into thinking "Oh it's an i7 therefore it's very powerful!", the GPU chipsets are dogshit no matter what, and the whole thing is so fucking bulky it defeats the point of portability.
>>
>>337691862
Yeah I'd recommend it though. I always got stuck in shit hotel rooms for a couple days waiting for equipment to shop up so being able to plug in to the TV's HDMI and play stuff with a gamepad was a godsend.

>>337691874
I dunno why I never thought of a cooling pad. I think the Lenovo Ideapad's, while capable of gaming, just weren't designed for it.

I'm having trouble finding a link to it now, but I have Lenovo Ideapad Z500. 2.8Ghz Dual i5, 6GB RAM, some GE 600 series dedicated graphics card, I think.

Definitely wouldn't be able to keep up with FO4 or other newer games but since on the go I usually play games like Spelunky, Isaac, Enter the Gungeon, etc. it usually wasn't an issue.

Plus it could run PS2 emulators really well so I spent alot of time doing that.
>>

Y580?
>>
>>337691862
Honestly you'll enjoy it a lot more if you just build a mini atx and lug a screen around. Assuming your travelling is staying in hotels for months at a time, and not driving town to town selling dishcloths.

A very good gaming laptop will cost the same as a mini atx build with a shitty laptop/tablet for when you're in a waiting room/metro.
>>
>>337692207
It's a shame that up to this point, basically only Apple has used Thunderbolt because the newest version is the only thing even close enough for external GPUs.
>>
>>337690931
This is the worst idea ever. You will be bottlenecked by shitty haswell/broadwell i3 or i5-XXXXU shitty cpus. And i7 laptops come with decent gpus in the first place.
>>
>>337689881
I have an asus rog 750jw? From around 2012-2013. It,got outdated fast.downside was i brought it to class and everywhere on campus. I looked like an autist and that shit was heavy as fuck with textbooks. The smarter choice for me wouldve been an ultrabook. Mixing college with gaming is not a good idea. The hindge on the model is weak, but in addition i was rough with it.
Specs: 1tb memory,8 gig ram, gtx 750m, i7 gen 4. Still can run games on medium ( i dont ask for much

the new USB format is already faster than Thunderbolt, and a high level candidate for the external devices.

Worst of every world. Not good hardware, too heavy to be portable, tiny battery life so you always need to be plugged in, need a mouse for gaming so you always need a desk.

It's already a better idea getting a PC if the laptop is over $200.

That $500 could make a super nice PC. This plays W3 on Ultra at 25-30FPS.

Op here again. Thanks for all the input.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834233120

I just found this one. Opinions? It seems like a hell of a deal. There's not much out there on this laptop though. The only thing I can find is that it gets hot and loud which I think could be partially solved by a cooling pad.

>>337692324
I'm not typically in hotels for months at a time and space in my work truck is limited. I travel all over the US anywhere from days to months.

Also, I can justify dropping money if it accomplishes what I want at a decent price.

Don't settle for anything less than an 860m or 950m gpu if you are planning to game on 1920x1080p. '' gaming'' brands such as Rog and Alienware are overpriced. Steer clear off then and try to find a computer with similar specs but from a different manufacturer

where the hell did you pay that much for it? It was already going for less than 850 the same year it came out, and I saw it go for mere 790$ still couple years ago.

>the new USB format
What USB format? USB type C uses the new Thunderbolt standard, they just ditched the mini-DisplayPort connector.

it's basically PCIe 3.0 on a 4x slot.
>>
I got an asus g46vw from best buy on Black Friday for $700 in 2013.
Dual core i5 at 2.6Ghz
Gtx 660m
8gb ram
The resolution is shit, 1366x768, but that just means I can run anything on it just fine. I'm very happy with my purchase, idk why you mouth breathing autistists have such an issue with gaming laptops.
>>
>>337689881
Had an ASUS n61jq for a while, ran shit pretty decently.

>Do you have a gaming laptop?

No
>What are specs you look for in a laptop?

as a 2016 choice, something that has Skylake i3, on it,4GB RAM at least,SSD optional,if it doesn't have you buy one with plenty of space and make the old one external drive. Also idgaf about gaming on laptops,so any graphics card would do to me.Personally imo gaming is not for laptops man,get a desktop PC,no need to bother for battery,or if it gets hot, and it's easier to clean from dust. Also you are way comfier.

Where I live, no (new) laptop costs less than 200€, and just about any single one that's below 300 is some Chromebook-tier toy.

I was lucky to get this Packard Bell EasyNote TS for 399€ during a store's stock removal sale in 2012. It at least had a proper GPU (540M) and decent 6GB RAM.

I had the asus g73jh for about 5 years now and it's done okay. It was really convenient to go to my friend's and game, but i'd run into over heating issues the odd time. Ultimately, it bit the dust since you can't upgrade it.

usually, a low-end ultrabooks go for ~900 bucks, while the actual high-end ones are around 2000$.

So yeah, to me that sounds like even worse waste of money, since the specs would be even more underwhelming, and hardware upgrading options are literally nonexistent on such slim machines.
>>
>>337693985
yeah, a shitty 35W one that is a few years old

this shit is not made for gaming

The trick is not to get one that explicitly calls itself a gaming laptop. That's the shit that's overpriced and useless because only a madman would try and run high settings on a laptop battery.

Don't. That is a ripoff of all ripoffs. That 980m is nowhere near the level of even a 960. You don't fucking need 16GB of RAM on a fucking laptop--anything that would require that much would quite literally melt your fucking motherboard from how fucking hot it gets. 2.7GHz of a shitty mobile i7 is a bottleneck--you couldn't even run Witcher 2 at 1080p/30fps with this piece of shit.

This things' battery life will be less than 45 minutes when not plugged in, and using something that's six fucking pounds for anything other than gaming is mindlessly stupid.

If you /REALLY/ must have this, then save up another $200 afterwards and buy a very cheap and small thinkpad to do schoolwork with. You will thank me months and months later when you realize how much of a pain in the ass it is to carry that monster with all of your textbooks, and instead carrying the thinkpad to and from classes will benefit you far more. Just turn the gaymen laptop into a very gimped mobile desktop.
>>
>>337694580
This.
>le games don't use CPUs meme
yeah that's true for (most) console ports.
Any PC exclusive will utilize the CPU. Also if you want to emulate PS2/GC you need the CPU. Also laptop dual cores are complete fucking garbage compared to laptop quad cores which are nearly as good as desktop CPUs.
>>
>>337694480
You fuck out of here you massive normalfag retard. If your seriously defending laptop gaming then you need to go back to r e d d i t and stay there.
>>
>>337694706
>Also laptop dual cores are complete fucking garbage compared to laptop quad cores which are nearly as good as desktop CPUs.
Yep, way higher TDP to work with so turbo boost works better, and you've got more cores if something is actually multi-threaded. If a game only uses 2 cores on a quad core laptop CPU, you'll be able to run those two at the turbo boost speed much longer / better than a dual core laptop CPU will.
>>
>>337690782
I have this laptop, it's okay I guess. I run most games at med-high 30-40 fps so it's basically a slightly better PS4.
I wasn't about to bring a fucking desktop to college with me so this is good enough.
>>
I don't have space for a desktop until I move out. So I use a Lenovo Y510p. It suits me just fine and runs everything I throw at it. I don't play too many very recent games though and have an xbone for the few recent titles I'm afraid of running.

Got a M18x ayylmaoware which I got for cheap some years ago.

Came with 2960xm plus 580m SLI. Replaced the buggys 580ms for a single 7970m and OC the 2960xm from 2.8 to 4.1GHz all cores.

No problems so far with the laptop, played DSIII almost maxed at 1080 without issues.

Friend took a couple home and sold one to me for 50$
It's such a piece of shit it can't even run terraria but it's good for school and it's loaded with every abandonware game you can get
It's a SMAC/OpenRCT2/GzDoom/google docs machine, and that's all I need

Anyone have any other recommendations? I'm not even trying to play stuff on ultra or anything crazy. It'd most likely be playing Overwatch (if I have decent enough internet at the hotel) and last gen games. Appreciate the input guys.
