The issue here is that it's too neutral. Ask yourself this: what situation would crop up that would cause Mario to stand like this, in a perfectly symmetrical fashion? He's an adventuring plumber/doctor/construction worker, yet you only possibly get the plumber part from this. Mario looks most Mario-like when he's doing something, whether it's working with his hammer, stomping on Goombas, breaking blocks, or even just sitting down and taking the wrench to a pipe.
