>>

yes but i was learning japanese at the time because i was terribly obsessed with anime and japanese culture at the time.
>gives up on japanese
was kind of a lie. i took it up to japanese 5 along with japanese conversation 1/2/3 and japanese literature. i wretch at the standards of anime nowadays but maybe i just grew out of it. don't really watch anime anymore or play jrpgs but i still listen to japanese music every now and then.

>>337426169
on topic the most effective way to learn is to actually take classes. i ended up flaking because i couldn't keep up with kanji (an average jp high school student should know at least 1800 kanji by graduation)

memorizing vocab is tantamount but for reading, a good way to practice is to karaoke. if you memorize the lyrics beforehand you can associate the words and recognize the kana/kanji better. we would do this every weekend back in college and it was pretty effective.

i dont think games are a good way to learn japanese until you're pretty advanced. you'll run into kanji that you probably wouldn't normally encounter in everyday conversation.

hiragana is mandatory. don't skimp on katakana just because you already memorized one phonetic alphabet. i made that mistake and now i can barely read katakana.

>Japanese
>Not useful

Despite all the fear mongering about demographic crises, the rise of china, lost decades, etc, Japan is still going to be a major player in the global economy, and critical player in the Asia-Pacific region.

The idea that learning any language that more than one hundred million native speakers is absurd. Besides, the act of learning another language, any language, is a useful practice in itself.

If anon wants to learn Japanese, then he should do so. You won't get far in learning a language if you're doing it for no other reason than to fluff your C.V.

nah man i get where you're coming from it was a family guy joke.

srsly i work for a chinese e-commerce company and everything you say completely aligns with the work conditions i have to deal with.

im in global marketing so luckily a lot of the shit isn't on me, but on technical teams to implement but unfortunately they're the same chinks that you described so well in that industry example.

it's completely true; i get refuted for reasons that are, not only in my specific field but in marketing in general are the most completely wrong excuses i have ever heard.

my partner nearly put in his 2 weeks, i could see him burning red and fuming in abject fury. im a more stable person, so i could only laugh manically in my head at how completely retarded this guy sounded. BUT, he's the CTO with close ties to the CEO so i knew it wasn't a fight we could win.

i might not be in my industry as long as the person in that example is/was, but it's the absolute truth; chinese are just the worst to deal with in any industry.

Visit the Japanese learning general in /jp/. Among their links is a list of manga that features furigana, i.e., kanji letters with little hiragana/katakana next to it to show how it's read. I think that would be best for learning how to speak. Not so sure about learning how to write & read kanji.

Google Translate has better kanji recognition.
Say what you want about Google, but that's one thing they did right.

my guessing is that either the kanji is basic enough that it doesn't require a furigana or that the furigana is removed for censorship purposes to prevent kids from understanding what it really means, like in doujins.

What is the purpose of speaking many languages?

The only reason I can kinda' get is for animufags who desperately want to watch anime without subtitles or play Jap-only games. Then you're doing it for a hobby, and I can totally see that.

But what about other languages? Like, take French, or Greek. What exactly is the point of learning those languages?

Most civilized countries speak English as first or second tongue anyway, so why bother with anything else?
>>
>>337435916
Google has kanji recognition? Via what program? I recall GIS a kanji a few months ago with no results.
>>
>>337436005
I first learned English, since I was attending a church-based kindergarten in Tokyo. I went on to learn Japanese as a second language in Japan International School up to 2nd grade elementary school.

Then I went (was dragged) to Iraq where I learned Arabic. Also learned French but didn't really speak it much so I'm no good at it.

Since I left Japan 23 years ago I've hardly had any opportunity to speak it, neither online nor here in Australia where there's some Japanese population. It's truly a language mostly reserved for the single country it comes from.

Still, I actually managed to improve as a youth by reading a fair bit of manga, magazines & watching tons of anime that my siblings had brought & recorded on VHS./blog

I don't think so. It might be an option available at some schools though.

Reminds me of a funny rumor I was commonly asked to confirm/debunk in Iraq: "Is it true that the Japanese are so good at designing that their streets don't need traffic lights? Because traffic flows without interrupting each other?"

My response:"If we didn't have diplomatic immunity over there we wouldn't have used the emergency-vehicle lane to circumvent the common 6-hour traffic jam on the highway. No, they have traffic lights, they even have traffic lights for crossing the street (not a thing in Iraq)."

>Is playing games in Moon a good way to learn Japanese
Depends om what you're playing... No fantasy games they'll add unnecessary vocabulary to your brain and nothing too long, something like Katawa Shoujo or some other VN would be good for practice

>Are some games better than others for learning Japanese
I'd reccommend not using vidya as a staple of leaqrning Japanese, however everyone is different in how they learn and what is effective for them, for example I'm using TV shows like dramas and period pieces listening to what words they are saying and practicing my pronunciation... if I don't understand a word they use i pause and look up what was said.

A good way to learn any language is to find the best way that keeps you interested and motivated in doing so... you have specified that vidya is your desired choice so go for it

tl;dr wouldn't recommend vidya as practice but maybe that's how you'll learn best, everyone is different

>>337438229
This anon has a point. If you want to practice Japanese, keep in mind that manga, anime and vidya are entertainment first and foremost. It's not created in any way that would make a learner improve. However, like he stated, some people learn better that way : I have myself made some major progress with JP vidya but the progression curve happens to be quite logarithmic.

In addition, never make the mistake of playing a game you already played before for a second time in Japanese. If you already know what the story is, what the UI says etc., your experience will be very biased and you'll just end up glazing over all the text automatically when you're not up to read, instead of challenging yourself.

katana a shit to remember, the more complicated hirigana characters are worlds easier to associate memories with since they usually take a decent amount of effort to get the curves right.
>>
>>337435568
It's not like the kanji exist on their own and you have to figure it out just by looking at the kanji alone. Most words are comprised of either multiple kanji or of kanji with hiragana, making it quite simple to recognise individual words. Japanese people aren't reading kanji, they're reading words that contain kanji.

If all else fails, context will make it pretty obvious which meaning is intended.

>all this terrible fucking advice
Makes me laugh every time.

Don't take a course, it's a waste of money and time. Study kanji if you want, it's up to you, but if you do it, do it at the start for maximum benefit.

A standard pace is 20 things a day, any lower and you're really not learning anything. Start slow, and work your way up to find the level you're comfortable with. 20 to start, then after a week add another 5. Keep doing this until your reviews feel like too much hassle, then drop down by 5 to hit a sweet spot.

The single most important thing is not to spend all day with your head in Anki. You should never be hitting 2 hours, and going beyond an hour is pretty shitty. The rest of your time should be spent doing whatever you want, but try to stick to Japanese shit. Read some fucking Yotsuba, watch TV, read some porn because the dialogue is generally 3rd grader level, the more time you spend consuming Japanese shit, the faster you'll get where you want to go.

If you know any shitty mainland euro languages, you were abused as a child. Either your parents didn't love you enough to just teach you English, or they were too stupid to do so.

If you learned a language that wasn't English by yourself with no real help, then that's fair enough. Dumb as hell, and almost certainly a waste of your time, but at least you made the conscious decision to do so.

I live in pretty comfy rural Japan.

Small apartment. Not the best pay. I have made one genuine friend. I'm not the type to have friends, though.

Most things are pretty cheap here, it seems. At least compared to America.

Everyone speaks to me in Japanese. That may be to being in a ruralish place.

Today was the first time I randomly got English. Some old clerk at a konbini said 'thank you very much' instead of their regular shit. Was kinda nice hearing something different, actually.

Most of these things really depend on where you live and what your job is, though.
>>

I live in tokyo with my gf. Apartment is smaller than what I was used to in ausfailia but perfectly sufficient for us.

Everything is at least half of the cost of Sydney, if not a quarter.

I get invited to baseball by co-workers, occasionally go drinking with a random old lady who lives near me, hang out with dudes from my martial arts club and have random uni students asking to add me on facebook and line at izakayas.

They want to use English because it's free English lessons. I generally end up speaking half-half because my moon isn't good enough.

We originally planned to stay for a year but recontracted because we love it here.

I can't speak for corporate culture but, in my experience, that's colossal faggotry regardless of country. My mates who work in big companies at home are pulling 14+ hours days too.

Nope. Previous teaching experience of some description is well regarded but not essential (I taught martial arts). I have CELTA but my gf and I were the only ones in our intake with an actual ESL qualification.

The company I'm with is called Borderlink. They hired me from Ausfailia. Interac does the same and pay more + transport but they can be pretty shitty to work for from what I've heard. Steer clear from big eikaiwa. They treat you like shit and hold you hostage with your visa.

>>337448075
Pretty much. They just use you in place of the textbook CD. I got offered one job doing that but I don't have much free time between work, training and doing a teaching degree by long distance. I have a few mates doing it though. Most companies will be cool with it as long as it's a) not the kids you teach or b) in the same city as your schools.
>>
>>337448330

>>
>>337448723
So, once again, how hard is it to get a teaching gig for a non-native English speaker?

Say, I'm Russian or Estonian or any other type of Eastern European guy, what are the chances for me?

And is that ALT position salary enough to sustain myself?
>>
>>337448980
You'd probably need some English language certification to demonstrate your proficiency. There's three or four filos at my company, a couple chinks and possibly a Russian. There was also a Glaswegian. God knows how he got a job. Fucking native speakers can't understand Glaswegians.

Assuming you don't have any debts to pay while you're here you should be good. There's an american guy who's been paying off a car the whole time and he's been struggling but managed to get through.

One thing to bear in mind if you don't get paid for two months due to how pay cycles work here so you'll be living off saving for getting your shit set up.

Old Japanese games are all in Hirigana and Katana with spaces between words partially because they were meant for children and partially because they didn't have enough room to put in a bunch of Kanji shit. And the spaces were so it could be readable.

So for picking up some basic grammar and vocab they could be okay. Though you should teach yourself hirigana/katakana first.

Like you wont be an expert but it's decent practice especially considering you don't need to learn a shitton of kanji first.
