What games would you consider hidden gems? Games that didn't do well sales-wise and aren't very well known but are actually very good.
Honestly with the internet they don't really exist. Good games are either popular or have a cult following (like your pic) that leads to quite the word of mouth.
>>336196726
>>336196840
They still do. The Internet just lessens the severity of their hiddenness.
Shinobi 3DS is a good recent example of an excellent game overlooked and dismissed for various reasons.
>>336196840
Maybe to you, "hidden" implies a lot more difficulty in finding out about them generally. And you are right about the internet's large array of pools small and large, easy to find at a moment's notice on just about anything.
What OP is asking about still relatively applies in a significant way - maybe reworded: what outstanding games didn't seem to get recognized in a significant way by the mainstream?
The kinda paradoxical thing here though, and it's been on my mind a lot over time..the more popular things get, an accompanying value of dilution, and oversaturation applies...so while hipsterisms are easy to mock, there is truth in great things being even greater when they aren't torn apart by the lowest common denominator.

This pic is haunting me to this day.
Pretty much all the games I thought were hidden gems, did eventually get more love and recognition through some random youtube/twitch/whatever personality.
Gitaroo Man is known but not praised as much as I think it could be, for anyone who likes their music/rhythm games with hyper Japanese personality.
>>336197575
>what outstanding games didn't seem to get recognized in a significant way by the mainstream?
That's a better way to put it.
Stop bitching about technicalities and post more games, anons. I want something cool to play.
>>336197221
I wanted to check this game out when it was new but it became a blip. I could look around for reviews/thoughts, since you brought it up though, mind explaining why it is so excellent yet overlooked?
>>336198564
Brain Lord
King Colossus
>>336198564
This was awesome. I started it but had attention drawn elsewhere. Really cool style and surreality, like Killer7/SMT had a baby raised in cuhrazy deep action.
>>336197702
I know, right? The unnecessary "for" in Mickey's first sentence still bugs me.
>>336198707
Why is it excellent? Original concept, great story, stellar animation based on rotoscoped 3D models. Just an all around very polished, unique and memorable game experience.
Why was it overlooked? Who knows. Lack of marketing maybe?
>>336196726
Keroblaster
>>336196726
>>336198243
>>336198564
I can verify that these are damn fine games.
A lot of people also don't seem to know about Tomba! 1&2, Guardian's Crusade, or Bomberman 64 1&2 in spite of how well known I always think they are, so I'll mention them here.
>>336199112
I was asking about Shinobi 3DS. I think you were explaining Ghost Trick? If so, which is an SSS rank game IMO.
>>336199112
>Why was it overlooked? Who knows. Lack of marketing maybe?
It was well know, it's more that it was at the high time of DS pirating, so it really hurt the sales.
Any hidden gems with good narrative?
>>336199696
Extremely tight game design which maintains the spirit of Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi III without slavishly replicating them. The graphics could be better, and there are moments of sloppy level design, but it's a great game. Shame it'll never see a sequel.
Ogre Battle series are FANTASTIC SRPGs. Some of the best you can find.
Monster Rancher is an amazing sim game that didn't took off because people thought it was just a Pokemon impostor. Still had quite a few games in the series, all of them unique.
Norrath series on PS2 is an Everquest-themed ARPG. Just really solid overall.
Desktop Dungeons is like a fun intro-to-roguelikes.

Knuckles Chaotix

Getting now. I recently wondered if there was actually another full Pixel game by now. Excite mode, thanks!
I don't knoe anyone outside of /v/ that's ever even heard of Radiant Historia
>>336200338
IT's because of /v/ that i bought this and Ghost Trick, i shouldn't listen to /v/ but those games were good.
I like the Earth Defence Force series
>>336200112
OB64 doesn't get enough love for how amazing it is. Seriously. I don't even have good art at hand of it to post, so original OB will have to make do.
>>336200563
Exactly the same case for me.
Honestly, every series I've tried on /v/s advice has worked out. It's just a matter of lurking long enough and being patient to get multiple opinions so you can make an educated decision.
>>336200112
>Ogre Battle
>Monster Rancher
Excellent taste, anon.
>>336199882
>DS pirating
do you really think Ghost Trick is a game a shit ton of people would pirate
>>336200621
That's more of a sleeper hit
>>336196726
Pro tip: if your game isn't critically acclaimed or financially successful, it's probably not good. Just pointing that out. "Hidden gems" should be replaced with "crap I liked but no one else really did."
>>336200642
When did Destin have a chain gun
>>336201161
>another "contrarian numb mind" episode
Saboteur, it's a pretty good game, and as a person who likes WWII and parkour, it was pretty sweet.
>>336201161
>Good is determined by a popular or pedestaled opinion
>>336201474
I don't even remember where I got this. Most of by OB and TO related arts came from some japanese board where people would post art they found, made and your usual oekaki.
>>336201161
There are a lot of games that end up releasing at the end of a systems life. Such a shame too for the company.
>>336196726
nice meme, but ghost trick was mediocre at best
>>336201161
And sometimes having a game being financially successful and/or critically acclaimed means jack shit.
Hidden gems might not be the best term but you are just going from one extreme to the other.
>>336201474
>>336196726
Kingdom Hearts
>>336201476
>>336201653
>>336201670
Come on. Sometimes I like bad games too. But you can't delude yourself and say that they're good just because you like them.
Post some gameplay vids you retarts
>>336202006
Gosth Trick is great though, you can say a game is shit if you don't know wich game is any of those anons refering to.
>>336202006
There are reasons why a game does poorly outside of its gameplay.
Undertale
>fear effect
>fear effect 2
Super Mario Brothers. Super Mario Brothers 2.
>>336198564
Why did he wear different colored jean pants in the various localizations?
Just beat Zangyou mode. This game is a legit masterpiece.

I really liked threads of fate for the ps1. Never see anyone talking about it though

I thought digital stores were supposed to solve this shit, not do absolutely nothing.
>>336202681
It's available on playstationnow

That game was great. Always liked the differences in gameplay for both characters

Nothing is a hidden gem anymore because >>336196840
That said Elemental Gimmick Gear for the Dreamcast (and Saturn in JP I think?) is a really good post-apocalypse-themed Zelda-style dungeon crawler that me and 3 other people in the world own. 2D spritework is beautiful, the music is great, the game is hard as balls.
>>336202803God fucking dammit Sony you gigajews.
Why is that shit on PSNow, but not on your main store-front.
>>336202906
The Internet doesn't totally erase obscurity.
Sequence is pretty cool. I got it on a steam sale a while back and had a blast. I think its name got changed to something else due to legal shit. Before the Echo maybe?
>>336196726
Did you just see a Jwittz video or something
>>336202471
Came in here to post this. My favorite game.
>inb4 someone tries to say Squaresoft games can't be hidden gems
Its release was sandwiched between a shitload of huge mega hit games in Squaresoft's golden age, plenty of people missed it or only played the demo.
>>336201634
It had some pretty repetitive missions and the driving was pretty wonky
But it introduced me to Koop and had an amazing setting, for that I love the game
