Eventually, some people begin settling for stuff they wouldn't even consider normally because they want to play something new for a change that they haven't already played over and over again. It's like a man who hasn't eaten in weeks ravenously devouring a piece of half-rotten meat because the alternative is starvation; granted, that might be a bit of an extreme comparison, but the point is that after a while even a relatively bad game starts to seem preferable to none at all.
And while I admit this is just me talking, the modern stuff has spoiled me. The older games may have better quality, but they still come off as looking and feeling visibly older and less polished than more recent stuff, and it just doesn't feel as good as it could (or should) be as a result. It's hard to appreciate the old classics when something like "this would be better if it was in HD" simply will not get out of your mind.

Gen 8 is one of the last nails in the coffin of gaming. Everything is forced online play, couch co-op is dead, controllers cost $50 a piece, microtransactions are normalized, season passes are a thing, and you can't buy a complete game upfront anymore. Less innovation and quirky one-off titles, more bland shooters. For God's sake, the DS4 comes with a fucking "share" button. There are a couple of games here and there that look fun, but that's about it.
Gen 6 is the peak of 3D video game achievement in terms of innovation, great consoles, great controllers, and most importantly, couch co-op.
Gen 4 is probably the best for 2D consoles/handhelds (SNES + GameBoy)
Gen 7 was good overall, but is also the turning point of where things start to go down the "money>fun" route that we plainly see gen 8 on now.

Maybe not now. If they get their acts together they will definitely be in the position to nab up Capcom, Sega, Atlus, Platnium. Then they'd be an unstoppable machine. They better hurry it the fuck up before Sony gets the same idea.

Sony is in no shape to do the same either, Their TVs, phones, computers, movies, and camera divisions are all bleeding them dry. Sony is in worse shape than nintendo.
