Single-player is the way to go. Sadly, most HL1 multiplayer mods are dead like Action Half Life, the Specialists, Firearms, PVK, Vampire Slayer, Tour of Duty, Natural Selection, that one revolutionary war mod whose name I can't remember, etc. Although, I think Firearms and PVK mods, as well as, Zombie Panic got ported to source plus NS2 was released as a stand alone - not sure if any of those are alive.

Anyway, for single player try these

>They Hunger
>Geshundheit (I'm probably spelling it wrong).

Those are just off the top of my head. Also, Sven Co-Op was recently released as a free stand alone and is still active

Yeah, I played through Sven with a pal recently and had a good time. Occasionally I also hop onto TFC but its hard to find servers.
As for single player I haven't tried any of those except for They Hunger. I really liked but honestly it was too scary for me. I dunno what it is, maybe the fast-paced nature of it? I beat Amnesia with ease and watch a shit-ton of horror films but something about goldsrc horror games like that and afraid of monsters just frighten the fuck put of me. Maybe I'll power through 'em this week as well as try out the others you recommended.

I remember Heart of Darkness. You had to conserve your heavy hitting ammo if you wanted to have a chance at surviving those bullshit endgame zombies.

I'll also say DON'T play Redemption, the only thing I remember about it was that it was ass.
