First off stop playing a shit civ, Japan is literal trash tier. Second off, you're probably not doing enough micromanagement. You should be manually assigning and locking all of your tiles to focus on growth, and rearranging them depending on if you want to work specialist slots for great people or if you want to work production for producing settlers. (Protip: you can't starve while your city is making a settler). You need to focus on science more, I don't know what speed you're playing at but if it's turn 275 and you're only making 54 science you're doing something wrong. Finally, there's no reason to ever be working gold in one of your cities.

I wanted to settle a city close to where machu was but he did it way before I could.
So I decided to get the two city states for the resources but I ended up losing time building units.

What difficulty?

I did my first playthrough with my friends on Settler just to learn shit. We stopped around Normal because after that the AI just starts cheating at the game and it isn't much fun anymore.

You understand that you can focus city wide on a certain objective like science, production, or food right? Maintain good relations with at least 2 or 3 city states, I usually go for for at least one militaristic since they'll gift units that you can keep or just sell for gold. Don't be afraid to go for a nearby Civ since it helps a lot. I usually annex cities unless it's obvious that the Civ was just throwing cities down to increase score and the city has no useful yields or goods.

And yea more science. I focused on getting the city states because I was going to be stuck hence my lack of technology.

You just have to get a feel for build order and when to adjust it
In general, focus on food and science, all else is a means to facilitate the growth of those two
Usually settlers can wait a while but if you see a great site you grab it immediately

What's your strategy when you start off the game?

I always spend a turn with the warrior exploring nearby areas especially if you aren't next to a river, ocean, or mountain. It's even more urgent to look somewhere else to settle if there are no decent food and production yields in the immediate vicinity, and try for at least 2 goods.

After I settle, depending on map type I go for a Scout first just to explore quicker to find new areas to possibly settle in. Explore those natural wonders plus ruins. Remember to build tall at first, then maybe settle a bit more later on.

A /v/ game could work but it'd need to be held somewhere specific, a friday night /v/ thread or something. There's no way we'd get through the entire thing in 1 sitting or even 1 day, so it would probably end up being split up, but I would definitely be down for "friday night ci/v/" or something like that.

How the fuck am I supposed to enjoy MOO2 anymore? Normal difficulty is effortless now, but hard (the next step up) is ridiculous. Every other race ends up taller, wider, higher tech and with more ships, without exception. That not even the worst part, the worst is how the bipolar AI will cause even my closest allies to declare war on me out of nowhere. I'm also getting framed every other turn, pls halp

I rush Petra all the time when I'm playing against my scrubby friends because I can usually guarantee I have the highest industry by the time I get to the tech. GL is just a crapshoot unless you get a god-tier start.

The correct strategy when placed against aggressive AI on high difficulty is to bribe them to go attack someone else. They usually won't declare war on you until they finish fucking the other person's shit up, which usually gives you enough time to close the gap on their huge start advantage.

i'm on the 2nd hard and i get GL pretty easily. The game i lose is when i put too much time into religion and it doesn't pan out.

Not true, the game makes better unit placements, prioritize specific buildings that would benefit most from it and actually set up specific unit training cities like humans can.

I've made a million spectator games where I've time lapsed AI fighting against one another in different difficulties, with the mod installed you can see the clear difference in the AI's difficulty design. If you do not believe me then set one up yourself using the in game editor.

Just the no cheating ai mod, gets rid of all of the beneficial starting bias, expect for the placement bias like plains or forest ect.

If you install the in game editor from the steam workshop, you can set the map to reveal all, and put a nuclear sub in a random tile away from everything else, delete your settler and warrior (i usually pick Venice because yeah right is he gonna win the game) and then spam next turn, take your time to see how the civs are progressing. I've noticed that civs on higher difficulties amass much larger armies and have their their general resources much higher too. They also seem to have gold wheras those in lower difficulties like settler, prince, chieftan etc have no money or negative money.

So it's obvious that difficulty does affect their decision making.
