There simply is nothing connecting the the wanderer and the courier. There are a lot of discrepancies too. The courier outright states during his/her visit in vault21 that he/she can't imagine what life must be like inside a vault.
You could argue memory loss due to getting shot in the head but that's doing mental gymnastics really.

Although thats a dialogue option emphasis on the option part. What I love about NV is you pretty much can accept or not accept any dialogue choice in the game as canon to the couriers past.
What do you roleplay as your courier's history?
The courier is at least 30 years old thoughprobably 35 at the very lowest in normal circumstances.

I use brain damage to reason why I'm not as skilled as I was at the end of fallout 3, every level in NV past 30 is getting new skills and actually improving myself. Up to 30 is just getting back what I had.

Fair enough if you want to look at it as optional dialogue. There's still nothing in either games tying the wanderer and the courier together though. There's just more lore pointing to them not being the same. In HH it's implied the courier doesn't know shit about Christianity while the wanderer obviously would know about Christianity. But I don't mind if you want to RP them being the same though.

Depends on the run I'm doing honestly. It's been a long while since I've did a one but my last run was with a femcourier which was the most fun I've had with NV.
She (Caera) is a coward and a mousey backstabber that only enjoys the company of machines, fools herself into thinking she's a "good person" but succumbs to some pretty base Wastelander shit all the time in the name of survival. Thus she prefers being roaming the wastes alone, taking up courier jobs as a way to make extra caps in her search for robotic parts.
I used the Vicious Wastes mod (which I highly recommend) to cap her level at 20 and make myself as weak as possible while making the wasteland as brutal as possible. Mainly focused on sneak, science, guns and energy weapons. I didn't get a single skill up to 100 even. If I messed up sneaking and enemies caught me off-guard I'd be dead in 1-2 shots.
For weapons I used a modded varmint rifle as my main weapon. It was on par with the Ratslayer, except it had no scope that makes things too easy. Aligned with house, mostly no companions save for ED-E because they tend to fuck you over more than help you when it comes to sneaking builds.

The legion is probably the best thing for the wasteland in the short term though.
Their brutality will eradicate the problems of the mojave and unite them all under one banner. When they eventually fall the civilizations under them will have things in common with one another and trade and diplomacy will be easier.
