I haven't played the other games in the series, how newcomer friendly is this one? I've heard it's a reboot?

its not as newcommer friendly as it looks, its set in the same universe as the original franchise but its just one of the characters horribly botching a biased retelling of the first game's events with him frequently chiming in as the narrator during gameplay and cut scenes.
you are better off starting the series off with going commando and up, the original game that its based off of has aged pretty poorly and while i still loved it when replaying it on the hd collection i think its partially due to nostaglia so while id at least say try it out if it bores you jump into going commando instead

Adding to this, the original writer for literally every other R/C game left after the previous installment (Into the Nexus), so you're missing out on the witty and silly humor this series has had in the past. Like the guy said, HD collection is awesome and I'll even say the PS3 trilogy is my favorite (Crack in Time had a surprisingly touching plot involving family and purpose)

I would argue to play the first one first if you have never played an R&C game. The reason fans find it so hard to go back is because of improvements added into it's sequels, but since you haven't experienced those things yet, the first game should seem better.

It's fucking great. Nostalgic cucks are going to beg you to play the PS2 games, but this one is a perfectly serviceable entry point. If you end up liking it you should definitely look into playing the other ones if you have the hardware.

Not much other advantages. There are small graphical bugs in the HD collection but nothing game breaking (that I know of). If you already have 2 then you may as well get 1 and 3 too.

Don't listen to him. Play the first game before any other R&C game. The improvements made in R&C2 and on make R&C1 hard to go back to, but for a new comer to the series it won't be an issue. A lot of the weapons are balanced perfectly for the type of gameplay that's in R&C1.
