Windows 10

Block everything in http://pastebin.com/bp7wruLc through hosts file or through router if you're able to do that.

Both are legacy platforms now with limitations placed on their support not only for new games, but also for new hardware.

Like it or not its time to face the fact that you can't live in the past forever. There's a hard choice to be made about the future of PC gaming. Whether to allow a console company to take more control restricting PC games to a mere 'console mode', or switching now to a platform with fewer games in order to persuade PC devs to move into a future of freedom from artificial restrictions.
>>
>>333855685
Hosts file is confirmed to not work due to kernel level shennanigans. Router with open source stack or running virtualized on a Linux host are the only safe ways to use Windows 10 safely.

it's like the "i'm staying with XP forever!" people

>>333855345
Will would you ever consider 8?

It's 7 or 10, and right now 10 offers almost nothing so I'd say 7.
>>
>>333855345
7 is the best choice if you play a lot of old games.

7

Right now there's no real reason to switch.
>>
>>333855345
10
>>
>>333856043
How old? Good enough to play games from last generation and further?
>>
>>333855685
Incorrect, sadly. M$ has some bullshit that completely ignores that shit.
>>
>>333856021
10 refuses to work properly on my toaster and 7 just werks. Still I only use Windows to play vidya, for everything else I use my meme OS

There is however the distinct problem that if everyone stays on 7 and nobody switches off Microsoft platforms that in 2 years we won't have a good modern OS with gamer support that supports the latest hardware, and in 4 years we won't have a supported modern OS outside of the control of a console maker for gaming at all.

The sooner you switch off of Windows the easier the transition will be.

Win 8 has a stronger backend with way better back-compatibility than 7.

I actually like win 8 quite a lot, it's quicker, more robust and more powerful than 7, just with some fucking terribly stupid design decisions (Metro, lol).

Once you get past some of those shitty decisions you find that it's a pretty solid OS.
>>
>>333857907
If everyone stays on 7/8, then Microsoft will be forced to follow the money and make their next OS like that, or risk losing more market share.

>The sooner you switch off of Windows the easier the transition will be

Not sure if you're trying to shill W10 or get me over to Linux or some shit, but either way fuck off, I'll switch when I want to.
>>
>>333858320
This anon knows.

As soon as Win 8 is mentioned autists go LOOL MERTRO and shit fling.

Metro was shit yes, but I'd rather have a strong backend with a shitty, but still useable interface.
>>
>>333858637
Microsoft is now only interested in their OS as far as they can lock people into it. They're never going to make a new 'good' Windows. 10 is the end of the line and even there Microsoft is already attempting to transition power users off of Windows themselves by offering up limited Linux compatibility.

Unless you like tablet and console gaming. Its time to face the fact that we need a new platform or in a few years PC gaming is going to be as dead as Amiga gaming.
>>
I like Windows 10 and a lot of its features. I think the biggest reason why i have it is because I have a tablet PC too and I like "tablet mode", but only when the keyboard isn't attached. Windows 8 was basically always "tablet mode". As for my gayman PC, I like it on there just for consistency I guess.

That being said, I question whether I really do like the OS when it takes it on its own to delete programs like Speccy and CCleaner, when they work just fine.
>>
>>333855345
If you're going to use Windows then might as well use the latest one, seriously.

Windows 10 when Halo collection arrives.

But then again, with how badly Microsoft mangled the new Remedy game.. Would we even want to see Halo getting shat on even more?
>>
>>333856402
Its mediocre at best. Sorry anon. Maybe in some months if they ever fix the issues.
>>
>>333861523
What a shame.
Well it's not like I had 160gb of space in my hard drive to download the game + install it anyway.
>>
>>333855685
Windows 10 was killing my games when I tried upgrading to it.

I wouldn't go to Windows 10 until the last second, because it sucks in its current form.
>>
>>333862023
Microsoft now regards legacy Windows programs about like they regard legacy DOS programs. They're unlikely to invest significant time into supporting legacy games. Their compatibility code is really only tuned for specific business applications and even there Microsoft is trying to get companies to re-write their stuff to for UWP so it will work on their tablets.

Your best bet is to see if your stuff will work with Wine, its kind of like DOSbox but for Windows software.

I don't know about you guys buy I'm switching back to Windows 7 after the latest Nvidia drivers kept crashing/BSOD Windows 10 because M$ kept forcing changes to my OpenCL.dll for no reason.

>inb4 DDU

The worst part was that even if you did a clean reinstall the problem persisted like a cancer because it was a W10 issue.

>inb4 Linux

To be fair I fucking love the latest Linux Mint, but EVERYTHING runs so much shittier and I can't lay GSV or Dark Souls 3. Maybe in the next 10 years.
>>
Okay, so we have a new Games for windows live but worse, where you're even forced to buy off the windows 10 store with shit performance, surveillance of everything you do, forced ads and updates etc etc.

You have to be a massive retard update, what is wrong with you?

To be fair, Mint is based on really old stuff its meant to be good for Grandma to read her email, not for gaming. Its ok to not like Unity, but if you don't want to use it you're better off using a proper spin of the latest Ubuntu as you'll get better performance. Latest Nvidia drivers actually can deliver better performance and stability on Linux.

You better hope that the transition to Linux doesn't take 10 years, we have less than 4 years of Windows 7 remaining.
>>
>>333855345
Windows 7. There's already enough good games that work with it to last me a lifetime and something.
>>
>>333855345
7 if you play old games ( like Diablo 2 etc)
8.1 if you don't mind compatibility issue with old games.
>>
I personally have 10 installed just for gaming for any Xbone to PC ports Microsoft puts out, but Gears of War HD is still borked from what I understand and the performance for Quantum Break is absolutely atrocious.

7 is my primary OS right now (mostly due to work), but I am considering switching to Linux at some point when 7 gets a bit older.
>>
>>333864610

What the fuck are you talking about? Mint is based on Ubuntu, its as fast as it needs to be. What would actually matter in terms of performance is the Desktop Environment, for which I use XCFE + Compiz.

> Latest Nvidia drivers actually can deliver better performance and stability on Linux.

I haven't actually used the latest but v352 isn't really that old, so I'm going to doubt this claim unless Nvidia did something crazy recently.

An old version of Ubuntu. Linux has actually gotten quite a bit faster recently. You're probably better off using Xubuntu 16.04 which has a recent version of the kernel and X than you are using Mint.

>I'm going to doubt this claim unless Nvidia did something crazy recently.

Nvidia released drivers that support OpenGL 4.5+, Vulkan, and initial experimental support for Wayland. Not as big as AMD dropping Catalyst to use the open source drivers instead but still some significant changes.
