I got this vibe during some conversations, but not the vast majority of them. He's a dude trying to be good after years of being a terrible fucking person, who has to put up with some pretty awful people for the sake of seeing his wife and kid again. I don't know about smug and righteous, but John does have reason for acting skeptical and calling out other characters on their bullshit.

1) Reptitive missions, either ride somewhere and shoot people, or ride somewhere and shoot people with a Gatling gun. Only last mission is really cinematic.
