All 720 Pokémon that were officially revealed at the time are present in the game.
Accessories are now visible on both the player and partner in the overworld and in dungeons.

When all team members surround an enemy Pokémon, called an Alliance, moves that would normally be not very effective ignore type matchups.
Items called looplets and emeras are introduced. By putting emeras into a held looplet, Pokémon can be powered up. Any emera obtained in a dungeon disappear when leaving it.
A (Japanese: ジュークボックス jukebox) feature allows players to listen to music from the games and even previous titles in the series.
Returning features
The Deposit Box once again replaces Kangaskhan Storage.
The Belly mechanic makes a return.
The personality test that featured in the first two installments returns; however, it is optional.

To be perfectly honest this doesn't bother me much, I never liked Mega Evolution and never used it in Gen 6 games because it made them too easy (and they're easy regardless). Not being able to go super-overpowered and break walls anytime you please and thus take away the spotlight from other party members who don't have mega-evos is fine by me.

Rescue Team's 'story' was just as bad as the main series. More a series of isolated events really. Sure the whole fugitive thing was ok, but the finale was beyond awful.
Explorers's pacing was utterly dire, and I wanted to kick the partner in the face for using 'me' as a crutch for his career. It picked up in the last third, but I never gave a shit about any of the characters, so it was all moot.

A saving the world climax in these games is pretty much a forgone conclusion. Point being you could skip the entire expedition build up + expedition itself and you'd have missed absolutely nothing.

Partner got dragged through by the most obvious bad guy ever. Not 'my' fault. I'd be fine if he dragged me into stuff that was more altruism (Such as the Rescue and Gates partner) than career. Just felt like the entire first third was 'me' dragging him through his story.

The partner I already addressed, the guild are a bunch of walking verbal tics who contribute nothing to the story, Dusknoir was such an obvious bad guy it'd have been more of a twist to make him honest the entire time, and Grovyle shows waaay to little emotion for me to get invested. The characters aren't god awful, but they're still weak as shit.Do they improve in Sky's episodes? Only played Time.

Yes, it's true. I tried playing it in Japanese, but I didn't get very far since I honestly didn't feel like playing through it for a 5th time. However I did see the option to decide the partner gender right after being able to decide what kinda pokemon it is.

Wrong, everything serves to build up the status quo, the notion that you're playing an uneventful game where you're safe. The Drowsee and the hilarious Team Skull are the only remote threats before the fucking world ends, hat's why it's so shocking.
Note that the exploration part ends as soon as the true nature of the game is revealed, so it wasn't just padding.

I don't understand, your partner doesn't force you to do anything, they're is in the exact same situation as you throughout most of the game. They could easily be considered the main character. You follow him/her and he/she follows you.

You just see bad guys in everyone suspicious and you probably though Wigglytuff was the mastermind all this time. Play Sky's episodes, they have the best writing in the series, especially Sunflora and Wigglytuff's chapters.

It all feels like padding and arsing around because pretty much every one of these styles of stories always end in a save the world climax. I dunno, maybe playing a lot of JRPGs over the years just dulled me to this sort of thing.
I'd be fine with a bit of padding, build up and all that stuff if the characters were good, but as I said - whiny sap and living catchphrases. It's why I was able to tolerate Gate's padding a lot more since the partner was likeable and, most importantly, the characters you hang out with actually go on adventures with you. I might not have minded the guild so much if you could get them on your team. Not to mention they have personalities beyond 'yup-yup' and 'yoom-tah.'
The reason why I thought Dusknoir was a bad guy from the start, was, well - look at him. Does that look like the sort of character who's going to be friendly to you? Besides, he hints that he's evil on the beach anyway at some point. Gates on the other hand had a cute pokemon turn out to be a scumbag and also didn't foreshadow it at all, hence I was surprised. Not saying Gates has a good story per se (suffers from forgetting the show don't tell rule a lot), but it's certainly the 'best' yet in pokemon.
I'll check out the episodes if I can play them without having to play the whole main story again. Maybe they got decent at writing characters between 2007 and 2009.

As I said, I'd be fine with that if it gave me something else to be invested in. Like good, or at least likeable characters. Which, again, Explorers did not have, which is the real problem of the story.
PMD games almost always use evil looking pokemon as villains and nice looking pokemon as good guys. Just following the pattern, ergo, an evil looking pokemon who shows up suddenly, hints that he knew me yet chose not to tell me a thing about it triggered alarm bells. If they didn't hint at it, there might at least a 'will he or won't he?' feeling since he did save the two lead's lives with nothing to personally gain from it aside from maybe keeping up appearances.

The main merit of PMD that sets it apart from other roguelike are its varying difficulty, its gameplay and the integration with the basic pokemon gameplay and its nice storyline, with PMD Explorers having the best one.
Difficulty of each dungeon varies because of Types, so while a Pikachu will have an advantage on, say Waterfall Cave, he'll more likely get rekt in Sandstorm Desert.
There's also the content of the game itself. I could list all of them but it's pretty hard to slap everything in one post because each of them are extremely beneficial to how you play the game.
The premise of the storyline is basically HEY ANON GUESS WHAT YOU'RE A POKEMON! but whoever is writing the actual storyline knows how to write properly because, to summarize, you get to easily invest yourself with your character, your partner, and a lot of side characters. PMD Rescue is kinda wonky but PMD Explorers nailed what Rescue tried to do although you'll definitely feel different when you came from Rescue.
I haven't played GoI but from what I've heard, it's not worse than Rescue, although it DID remove a lot of things that made PMD challenging
It's good to know that people are feeling positive about this one. I was hoping Etrian Mystery Dungeon would fill the hole left by that turd Gates to Infinity, but the EO stuff didn't feel like it melded with the MD stuff that well. I'll probably wait for impressions before I get it but this looks like it could be exactly what I've been waiting for.

I once cheated to make me and my partner Darkrai and Cresselia. Both characters had a surprising amount of emotion frames, and if they didn't have one for a particular situation, they would just use the default frame. I think this might be because Darkrai and Cresselia were story characters though.
