It is more balanced than people give it credit for.
I mean, it's not perfect (Bayonetta, characters like Zelda and Jigglypuff being shit, etc) but still. Pound 2016 had a shitload of character variety and Abadango managed to win it all with Mewtwo of all characters. The balance patches we got definitely helped out a lot.

I'm not saying 64 is bad. I respect it for setting the foundations of Smash, but it doesn't have all the content that Brawl has. And obviously Brawl was much more likely to be unbalanced due to the huge roster it had compared to 64.

Its because of entertainment factor. If people enjoy watching a game, it doesn't matter how broken or flawed the roster actually is. People watch and enjoy Fox vs Fox all the time because the gameplay is combo heavy and exciting.
Personally, I feel the same about when someone uses Bayonetta in Smash 4. She is combo heavy, so I enjoy watching her more then I enjoy watching most of the other characters in Smash 4.
