Are you a fifthly tree-hugging elf, /v/?
>>
Can you build on constructed floors yet?
>>
>>332626187
A few things, like furniture and levers, yeah.
>>
>>332626187
I mean just replace the floor with a wall, it's the same difference. And that's the only thing you can't do.

It'd be nice if building on a floor with a wall replaced the floor and granted you the materials back but DF and quality of life are almost always mutually exclusive.

>recent update is pretty good but I'm less interested than ever
I would love it if Toady would

1. Focus on making the world a threat
2. Focus on making the every day running of a fortress a challenge
3. Fix the fucking lag from having thousands of items and 100 or more dorfs

34.xx was almost perfect with sieges and ambushes but even now with some ground gained back for sieges, it's piss easy to never lose. The only thing that ever goes wrong for me is a werecreature and lazy military planning. Even then I very rarely lose the fortress because of it.

I love how the worlds are 'real' and 'exist' outside of your fort. I really do. But it's come at a cost of difficulty and lag.

And the same thing happened with above ground vegetation variety. The already easy going nature of feeding the fortress became completely trivial. It is almost impossible to run out of food and be in a crisis.

Farming takes almost no time to do and I think that'd be a good area to work on, along with reducing the amount of crops you get per harvest or increasing the amount a dwarf eats.

Overall though, it is a brilliant game but unfortunately isn't a challenging game once you've learned it. The challenge is all centered around learning it. Once you get past the abysmal UI, and you figure out how things work and what to do, then the rest is just easy sailing never lose never feel challenged.

Which is it?
Can I build a multi-floor building with the intention of using it for living quarters without having every other floor being full wall?
>>
>>332626958
The first one. You can place any kind of furnature and work-shop on there with no problems.
>>
>>332626958
We said the same thing anon.

You can place any kind of construction on a constructed floor except a wall. If you want a wall then that's fine, the next level above it will automatically be a floor
>>
I can't keep up with DF updates. Every time I come back it seems that there's some new major changes but I have to dig around to find what they are before I can get into it again.
I never even figured out minecarts.
>>
>>332626641
So you've already made a fortress inside hell that's situated in a biome with husk producing mists?

There's still plenty of challenge to be had in the game if you go look for it, or course the game is going to be easy once you've learned to play it.

There's another 30 years of development to go yet, there's no rush to improve the gameplay when there are so many more core mechanics to add.
>>
I'm too big of a scrub to play DF.
what is good DF like game which has actual GUI?
Is pic related any good in current state?
>>
>>332628583
Rimworld

>>332628368
That's the typical response. "Oh, the games challenges aren't fundamentally interesting? Just do absurd challenges then!"

That's great. If I want to live in Hell with 10 fps then I will. But I don't, I've done that, and I'm tired of it. But most of all, I'm tired of the community excuses for the game.
>>
>>332628693
>Rimworld
isn't it built all around surviving enemy attacks with end goal of building spacecraft?
As much I can gather, aside of someone attacking your settlement - there is no other way to get everyone killed.
>>
>>332628583
No you're not, it just feels that way for the first couple of hours, stick with it bro, you can do it!

>>332628693
>But most of all, I'm tired of the community excuses for the game.

I'm not making excuses, I'm explaining why the game is the way it is because you don't seem to understand that it's not designed to be a game in the first place, and gameplay isn't a focus of development right now.

Slaves to Armok is a fantasy story generator that just happens to have an adventure mode game and a fortress mode game built into the mechanics. When the game is complete you won't have either of these modes, so it'd be a complete waste of Toady's time to work on improving the gameplay within them, to the exclusion of the core mechanics of the game. The same goes for GUI and tutorial, there's no reason for him to waste months developing features that won't have any value in a few years time because the game has moved on.
>>
>>332628956
>No you're not, it just feels that way for the first couple of hours, stick with it bro, you can do it!
I can't anon. I'm too much of casual for this.

That's why you've got the sidebar with them all listed, so you don't need to remember them! I've been playing this game for fucking years now, I don't remember most of the keys, but my hands do, don't worry about memorizing everything, just learn how the game works.

What's the first step in getting good and dropping safe, self-sufficient forts?

I always get up to a point in which I have about 80 dwarves with enough housing and food for everyone, then I just get bored and drop the fort because I can't think of shit to do.

You need to have some plans for something once you're established, nice roleplaying where you're the mug making fort, or cruel and unusual defenses, or making a fort somewhere inexplicable because you can, or just making something pointless and pretty because you feel like it.

Got any ambitions towards any of those? Because otherwise you're going to have to seek out challenges, like making forts in clownland.
>>
>>332628839
You can starve pretty easily, random events can fuck you over, some animals are aggressive. But it needs a lot more work, some of the random events just are impossible to overcome when they appear (a poisoned alien ship is pretty much a death sentence when I've barely got power running and people with guns), and everything else feels kind of barebones, it needs a lot more added to it.

Prison Architect has a similar feel to Rimworld, in some ways, though obviously a different theme. It's much more finished too, and they add stuff pretty frequently.
>>
>>332632457
Prison Architect is technically finished, but they just added hot water systems and temperature recently, so you can REALLY go to town making your inmates miserable now.

Hoping they flesh out escape mode a little bit though, it's ridiculously easy at the moment.

Walls are floor for the z-level above them
And yes constructed floors serve fine as regular surfaces for workshops and such
I once exterminated an entire necromancer tower and then expanded on it, built my fortress inside of it.

Why do aquifers exist? They are just a pain in the ass to deal with and offer nothing.

>>332634946
Aquifers are the single most useful thing in the game and an embark without them is trash.

I can run a fort fine but then it becomes like "what do I do now". I never dug deep enough to get to Hell, how do you even get there? The z-levels just stop. And I never made a pump stack or a magma piston cause those are loads of work. I had more fun embarking next to a volcano with no trees or animals. How do you settle the caves efficiently?

>>332637571
I had a great log once where one of my dorfs kicked a goblin into the pit of undead I had been filling for a long time. The kick itself bruised their liver and caused them to become sick, they fall down and hit the ground like a fucking truck, then you suddenly see like 100 different things attacking them, just tearing him apart. Even got strangled by his own reanimated hand.
