that's what I've been thinking ever since the first videos came out. It's clear that having enemies explode into HP and ammo is just a cheap way to skip properly designing levels and placing proper amount of supplies for the player. They also really seem to want to change the game into a first-person beater.

My bet is that you are invincible during the execution cinematics. Only Serious Sam 3 has kept the game going during melee finishers so far, and in that game they were mostly for fun or desperate attempt to save ammo.

That being said, this D44M has way more problems than just spoonfeeding players supplies. Pic related is one of them.

absolutely wrong. Skyrim tops retention for almost any game to date, and its not an isolated case. Lots of games keep player retention, including original doom, which still has a sizable fan base to this day.

You have thousands of things to choose from (and you get to choose how and when you do them) when playing Skyrim so it's no wonder it retains it retention. When playing through a linear singleplayer campaign such as Wolfenstein's or any other modern FPS, you're stuck on a single track through almost the entire game until you reach the end.

But it's right. How do you properly design a level? You NEED enemies, health and ammo. Adding armor, more ammo, hidden weapons is easy once you actually get to that, but to do it you need to have people play those levels first. Then you put changes in and let them play again. Instead we now have all enemies leave a standard pack of hp and bullets. This shit kills exploration. No more situations where you are struggling for survival, sweating while you consider blowing through enemies or going back for a secret/health pack. Just blast the nearest demon. Fucking HL2 did it with crates checking your status and dropping what you need, and I still hate it for it. Lazy fucking shits.

Assuming enemies drop all kinds of rockets and whatnot, that removes any danger of ever being out of ammo. It's not really engaging if you can just hold forward+attack and never die or run out of gun juice. You don't need incentive to kill things, you need other dangers than walking too close to a wall while firing rockets or dying from demon overdose.

I dare to greatly disagree, and also remind that the key-hunting was NOT the main dish, just a way to pace and guide the player through the maps.

The idea of supply conservation and secret hunting was, and still is a lot of fun, and really affected your performance and survival capabilities later on. All that is rooted to the fact that there was numerous different enemies with very different behaviors, and depending on the mixtures of these foes you had to change your tactic.

Honestly I think the trailer is just using all those slowdown executions to make it look cool. In all likelihood if it's like brutal doom then it's optional and the game plays just like regular doom. Which will be awesome. I don't know any serious brutal doom player that actively uses the executions or the FUCK YOU!

tl;dr
it's probably gonna be fine. there isn't much room to fuck up a doom game unless they it impossible to strafe fast, made QTE a thing, or everything is a slowdown kill where you can't be damage in the middle of the execution.
