Except I did play and anyones who incorrectly used DM was kindly corrected, and an explanation was given if they asked why.
And yes, DM was more commonly used than VC, because DM was a high level dungeon that took up a large part of end game for while. Most horde players didn't even know deadmines was a thing, so DM took precedence as the "DM" acronym, while VC took the alternative.
I've played alliance characters on 4 servers (Dethecus, Destomath, Sargeras, and Cho'gal) and they all used VC.

I said DM and everyone I knew back then also said DM. It was very easy to figure out that we were looking for a group to Deadmines by shift-clicking on our names and seeing our levels. People used to call Dire Maul "DiM" or refer to the wings DM North, West and East.
It was never complicated or even turned into an argument at any point and I don't know why you guys are arguing about it.

In nearly 12 years of playing I've never seen anyone refer to Dire Maul as DM. It's always DM North/East/West/Full clear/any wing. Never "LFM DM," that was only for Deadmines. Deadmines came first and was more important throughout almost the entirety of the game's history as a critical first dungeon for an entire faction, while Dire Maul was only relevant for high level PvE players hoping to raid, and even then only for a short while.
And yeah, RFC/RFK/RFD was bullshit because people would confuse them all the time. I'd see a level 40 looking for more for RFD and sign up only to find he wanted some shitty item from the ~30 RFK.
