Do you feel that the industry-wide standard of expecting the sequel to be bigger in scale, better in visuals and sell more copies is reasonable?

Are you okay with sequels selling as much, or maybe a bit less than the original, or do you think that every game absolutely must widen its audience between releases?

I just want mid-budget games to make a return, instead of everything either being AAA++ or small indies.
Where is my Serious Sam?

You should be pretty happy then considering that is what is going on right now more than it had over the last decade.
As for your question: expecting a sequel to expand on the title is I think completely reasonable. Expecting a sequel to CHANGE SOLELY for the purpose of appealing to a different (and wider) audience however, is not.
I don't think there is much point in making sequels if they don't have the ambition of improving and expanding on the previous game. I'd much rather see that effort invested into a new IP. So I don't think the expectation is inherently wrong.

>Where is my Serious Sam?
In the making, and it sounds very ambitious. Which might be great, but it also might be... worrysome. After all, we know how the last Serious Sam that took a large departure from the formula ended up.

I am not sure about that. Unless you mean European games, that seem to have low budgets, but then you adjust them to the size of the local economy and you see the odds are just as big.

How you you make more sales, without targeting more people? If all the old crowd bought it, and nobody else, it wouldnt sell more. You need to chase after a wide audience to sell more.

The Witcher is a large budget game, when taken in the context of where its produced.

>I am not sure about that.
I am.
I kinda understand I'm way older than most people around here, but I can assure you: middle sized and niche oriented market has grew ten or twenty times compared to what it was around 2007-2011. It's INSANE how much has this changed and improved.

>If all the old crowd bought it, and nobody else, it wouldnt sell more.
I can assure you, that is never the case. There is not a single, definitive number of people willing to buy your game. Just by simply improving on it, you should be able to extend your market.

It doesn't matter what you feel because businesses only care about getting you to spend money. They will manipulate those feelings to get you to buy shit by pandering to whatever self styled identity you're trying to build.

It's over, the businesses won because drones keep buying without thinking. Just enjoy the fact there's affordable vidya at all right now cuz it will never get cheaper.
>>
>>329450003
Then I imagine you mean to say that more niche games are being produced.
That may be true, but those are either cheap and experimental games, or expensive and safe games.
There is no middle ground, of a game that both innovates on some mechanics, and has a good presentation.

There are games where all you want is "more of the same, with issues ironed out".

Example?
DeS to DaS

Theres also one-trick pony games where the same trick obviously won't work a second time - if a game like this gets a sequel thats just "more of the same" its a flop.

And theres 90% of AAA vidya where they just make everything simpler, stupider - but market it as new and amazing.

I love girls with low voices. Perhaps I should send her a script so I don't have to listen to this bullshit.

It doesn't need to be "bigger", but it definitely should be "better". Devs should learn what the flaws of a game are and fix them, and improve on the core mechanics. Unfortunately a lot of devs just cut out anything that's flawed and dumb everything down, or make a straight rehash without improving anything.

>Do you feel that the industry-wide standard of expecting the sequel to be bigger in scale, better in visuals and sell more copies is reasonable?
No, sequels should be inferior and shit all over franchises.
>Are you okay with sequels selling as much, or maybe a bit less than the original, or do you think that every game absolutely must widen its audience between releases?
Sales are overrated. The best thing to happen in video games is when a game doesn't sell and the studio goes bankrupt.
>I just want mid-budget games to make a return, instead of everything either being AAA++ or small indies.
I also think people should take huge loans to produce an expensive product that then is inferior to the previous products the market had to offer and as such won't sell, driving people into debt. It's smarter than developing a shitty indie game with no budget in your free-time in hopes it's still interesting enough to sell a bit and thus turn a profit - or going all-in and meticulously crafting a sellable product with a large budget.

You've pretty much asked the worst questions possible. Enjoy your shitty thread.

Would you really hate it if a sequel is basically a very large map pack for the original, with a new story and some new assets/music for the different locations?
>>
>>329448772
I think sequels should just stop being a thing.

>>329451412
>game comes out
>you like it
>you never get more of it

Good plan.
>>
>>329448772
I get what you mean but games should improve on graphics simply because technology is getting better and everyone is getting better and better hardware

And it doesnt always hurt to expand the scope of the game, whether that means having a larger world or just a more detailed one in visuals or gameplay. As long as the artists are just as inspired and their vision is just as accurate it will be good.

But these things allow a more accurate depiction of the artists vision

Also the population is increasing which is part of the reason so many people play video games now

The sequel should have the same amount of quality and quantity, perhaps at different proportions but it needs to generally be just as good or better.
>>
>>329451615
Population is increasing in parts of the world you arent selling to.
If anything, the places where people will pay for your game have shrinking populations.

This
Franchise fatigue: The Industry.

In the past good IP's got a sequel, sometimes 2, but should'Ve been the end of it. Nowadays they take these franchises that already overstayed their welcome with those sequels and just carry them on ad nauseum. But it doesn't end there, they actually just categorized game elements from the whole and slap them together to make games. There is no creativity anymore in vidya and that is what's wrong with the industry. A bunch of untalented passionless hacks in a medium that was always driven by passion and creativity.
I blame all you little shits that keep buying this filth. I wish gamers would actually all unite under one banner and show them the finger.
Imagine no one buying, and I mean not a single soul, the new Assiscreed, or any of that dead cow milking bullshit. Imagine their faces, their horror.

Well we rather bend over more.

In the past expansions did this well enough. Do you need a rehash of everything that was good? Do you need "Seven 2" the movie? Do you?

I dont thinks anyone thinks SMB1 is the best mario game.
