Yeah you basically save often and if you do something like fail a quest then you kill yourself so you can go back to that save because if you use the "Reload Checkpoint" option then you get taken back to the last Rift Stone/Inn.

Two types of saving
Checkpoint reloading is from sleeping at Inns
Reloads are from your quick saves
Assuming you have not done any more saves, reload from your quick save.
You should NEVER do checkpoint reloading unless you purposely slept to avoid the autosaver
