ME1 was so much fun even though the planets were too often copy-pasta and the big plot hole. It had so much potential and they wasted it. Personally, I think the series should have gone like this:

I don't get the 'copy-pasta planets' gripe. That's what planets are like.
They're circle-y things floating in space, some are hotter, some are colder, some have funny little organic things crawling around on them, (but not many).
Pre-fab housing is legit- they're *uninhabited* planets after all. The visitors aren't gonna pick up some lumber & mix cement, they're gonna order a kit off of space-ikea that they can assemble for cheap or, shit, just drop from orbit.

The first Mass Effect for me was a Military SF just like Starship Troopers and The Forever War with much Hard Sci Fi as any episode of Star Trek but then once ME2 came the plot change to a Space Western with elements of a Space opera all over more like Star Wars meets Firefly.

I loved the setting and the tone of the first game the possibilities combine with Fantasy elements and the supernatural tone of the Reapers was a cool touch.


But to answer, yes Mass Effect is and still is sci-fi in his core.

I didn't like gameplay in Mass Effect 2 & 3 being restricted to a linear mission-based format. ME1 had the right idea, although environments were pretty empty and dull (although it lead to some cool atmosphere).

Dragon Age Inquisition had some amazing, wide-open locations with all sorts of cool environmental storytelling and details. It was such a huge improvement over the boring scenery and locations in Origins and it actually felt like a three-dimensional world. Imagine if Bioware made the same improvements to a new adventure-oriented Mass Effect game with an emphasis on exploration and heavier RPG/customization elements. No more room after room filled with chest-high walls. Let's see some real, open-world shit.

1. One of the Vorcha raised by people in the Citadel. 15 years old, nearing the end of his life. Laments how most of his species are utter fucking niggers and has tried and failed several times to help his people. Really civilized due to his upbringing. Tech specialist and heavy drinker

2. Batarian Medic
Fought during the Skyllian Blitz and the conflicts after. Chomps cigars and gets into passive-aggressive banter with the other human squadmates regularly

3. Quarian Biotic
Exposed to eezo before birth, basically a humanaboo and quotes old westerns occasionally. Outfit would have a few things on it that would confuse him for a human, IE human head shaped helmet, human shaped boots (which he says are remarkably comfortable), carries a holster with a Colt SAA at all times for aesthetics, uses his biotics in conjunction with baseball sized metal balls in combat

4. Ex Alliance Pilot
Former ace pilot but was dishonorably discharged for addiction to Red Sand. All I've really thought of at the moment

The characters are all designed being small scale less powerful characters for a smaller scale story

Why not have you play someone on the outside of the law? Or, instead, someone who works in the "dark area", like a Spectre, but without the same degree of freedom? An asari justicar, or a salarian STG member. Open the game up to further customisation and let you be an alien now that the stage has been set.

I feel like everyone who's played Mass Effect has done this. I think that Quarian humanaboo sounds a bit too far-fetched, but I'd know I'd take him on every mission just to hear his dialogue probably. Batarian medic sounds like a cool idea.

Personally, I always wanted to remove Jacob and/or Miranda and instead have Kai Leng be your Cerberus squadmate in ME2. Or just re-write Jacob's boring, pointless character into Kai Leng. It would have lent for some really cool character dynamics in ME3 when he's an antagonist. He could've been the only squadmate who was really "just in it for the money" and didn't give a shit about Shepard or saving people. Maybe you could convince him otherwise or something. I don't know, anything is better than what they gave us.
