Monster Hunter is the single deepest, most challenging, most skill-based game ever created. There is not a single other game in any genre that comes close to the level of skill Monster Hunter requires.
This is why Monster Hunter threads are the best, most intelligent threads on /v/. Only the smartest, brightest, and most patient people post in them. Essentially, the very best of humanity posts in them.
Conversely, the only people who don't like Monster Hunter clearly don't have the skills to handle its depth. It is too hardcore for them. That's okay though. Games like Halo exist for people like them. Monster Hunter fans are too good to hold grudges.

It takes hundreds of hours of play to even be able to survive a single round of G rank. If you are playing wrong for those hours, you WILL NOT be able to correct those behaviors without more or less starting from scratch.

I've got a few pals who play the game regularly and they wanted to make some new guys and start all over with me. I wanted to do some supporty stuff, so a bowgun with elemental damage/healy shots was what I was looking to do.
Then I almost died to a bunch of velociraptors eating me while I flail around like an inflatable tube man smacking my stupid fucking face against the ground.

Atk Up is fine but SnS relies a lot on raw so Element+ is great for it, or Status+ if you're using a status weapon

Not him, but I've been playing since Freedom Unite and have maybe 5k hours poured into the series overall, and he's not entirely wrong.
MH isn't a bastion of depth. Most of the difficulty comes from testing your patience and endurance, and from generally all-around high numbers on the monsters.
Don't get me wrong, MH is a 10/10 series and I'm already 100 hours into 4U, but its difficulty is obscenely overhyped, just like with Dark Souls. Not to mention 4U is probably the easiest game in the series yet.

I mean, I fucking love CB and it's a damn fine weapon but I still prefer hammer over CB simply because smacking monsters is way more satisfying and you're dealing KO damage far more consistently unless you're the absolute most godtier CB user out there. As for overhauls, I'm not sure what they could have improved. I already love everything about it.

The game has way too many crutches to almost delete any semblance of difficulty from the earlier parts of the game. You can Perfect any Caravan mission through mounting alone, and the Glaive has ridiculous amounts of utility and outclasses a lot of other weapons.
Combine that with the fact that they fixed almost ALL the hitboxes and removed most phantom hits, and all the quality-of-life improvements that make inventory management a joke, and the game ends up being extremely beginner- and casual-friendly.
Again, don't get me wrong, this is easily one of the best titles in the series in both gameplay and content, but they smoothed it out a bit too much.

Rex Talon is annoying since you have to constantly sharpen it, but Tigrex is one of my favorite monsters and I have a feeling Rathian is going to be annoying as fuck to farm. More often than not, armor slots alone won't net you the required points to fill skills up to +10.
Armor slots are there to supplement talismans, so start farming or start getting lucky.
There are a few jewels that are 1slot/2skill points like sharpening or capture guru.

Earlier on, it's not that important. Use decorations to push you into the next skill tier if you can, or to make up for an elemental weakness. If you're not sure or if you don't have enough to bump up a tier, don't be ashamed to just go for Health since it's all-around useful and you probably already have enough materials for it.
I have a question for any Heavy bowgun main. Why do I feel so useless in fights? I go through a shit ton of bullets each fight and I feel like I barely contribute. I have to either farm mats or spend money to get back the mountains of ammo I consume and each fight is different as I'll need different ammo, most likely a gun that can pref rapid fire a weakness so the flexibility required is stupid. Not to mention when I solo hunt it's so tedious. I read about the critical range crap so I feel like a baddie anytime I stand too far away. is there something I'm missing about this weapon? It's fun, but it's so retarded at times.

MH has become a lot more polished in recent iterations but it continues to screw the pooch when it comes to ranged weapons.
They simply aren't that useful until you get to G-rank when you get the armor skills and talismans to supplement what you need. On top of that they are relatively money intensive.
HBG is a little easier since it is more dependent on raw, but is still subject to some of the same pitfalls.

Heavy Bow's DPS is through the roof if you can just sit still and fire while something else draws aggro.
It feels like you're doing nothing because you're not mounting and you're not landing the big knockback blows, but you're dealing a steady stream of uninterrupted damage throughout the whole thing.
A lot of the viability also comes from armor skills, so they're generally considered to be late-game weapons.

I honestly wouldn't solo with any ranged weapon or the Hunting Horn. It's perfectly viable to do so, but they're weapons balanced around multiplayer as opposed to solo play.

Hunting horn is fine solo. It gets some of the earliest blue and white sharpness in the game.

The c-stick is fucking great. Feels a little stiff but after some hours it definitely gets "broken in" and becomes much more intuitive.
The graphic and processing upgrade is noticeable. People will argue and get into semantics about exactly how much, but going from a regular 3DS, you WILL notice the upgrade.

c-stick isn't essential, since they took out the water segments in this one which the only thing they were essential for in 3U. It can be useful, but to be honest, if the only reason you want the upgrade is for the stick and it being larger, you may as well find a cheap CPP.

You can 100% the solo game with any weapon. They're all viable.
But Horn and Ranged weapon users will have a harder time, because they're designed around group play.
I'm not saying they're bad. I'm not saying you can't beast through solo with them.

I agree with ranged weapons but again I think you're wrong to lump horn into them just because they get group buffs.
Offensively they stack up fine numbers wise. They aren't armor intensive at all since Maestro is mostly quality of life, and you can use the same skills as Hammer.
The only thing that truly gimps it is the lower KO value and the learning curve when it comes to swing angles.
But overall there's nothing about it that makes it harder than say Lance or DB.

Just entered High Rank, I'm aCB Userand I'm going down the Rathalos upgrade line, about to make myself a Seltas/Rathalos S/Ceanataur mix set which will give me Attack Up (M), Razor Sharp, and Fire Atk+ with my +4 Fire Atk Talisman. Gunna be good.
I'm also finally getting the hang of seamlessly switching between blade and axe as the situation calls. Feels good to have a fully charged shield within ten seconds of starting every fight, full phials shortly after, and being able to throw out 20%-boosted Axe swings mid-Sword combo.
