From the 4th chapter onwards The tstory goes full laytard and the explanations are disgustingly retarded, so yeah, plothols the size of a galaxy over there and even more you didn't mention.So they did the "magic" making everybody get unconscious and doing the shit behind the scene in the meantime yet absolutely NO ONE remembers constantly falling and standing up while losing consciousness. Also, I don't quite remember, but the game contradicts with the cutscene in which layton gets turned into a golden statue, his arm falls in a certain spot and in the trial everyone seems to remember it fell in an absolutely different one. The fuck.

The game is fucking retarded. I don't understand why people praised it so much. I tried warning Americans that it wasn't anything special since we were fortunate enough to receive the game earlier, but people fell for it anyway. The first few court sections are the best part. I'll agree Phoenix is a real dumbass in many occasions, and Layton is very Sue-ish (it can be played straight without being too much of a bother in his own game, but in any crossover, his over-perfection is going to show too clearly).

That was the problem with the two games clashing, it was inevitable because of how their worlds intersect.
Ace Attorney world is where everyone is a blithering retard, to the point that common sense and basic logic is treated as a superpower, and people can't tell the difference between Phoenix Wright and Furio Tigre.
Layton world conversely is a world where everyone is some kind of supergenius who can come up with puzzles on split-seconds, and is intellectual to the point where literally everything, even commerce at some points, revolves around designing and solving puzzles.
Phoenix is a butt monkey in his own series, and just happens to be someone of average intelligence in a world of retards. Even with that, he still gets treated like shit because everyone is stupid so they can't even realize his brilliance.
Layton meanwhile is an uber-genius in his already superior world. Layton has always been a perfect Mary Sue who knows everything and can do no wrong.
So of course when you combine the two you still have Phoenix as a butt monkey (even when he's right), and Layton as beacon of perfection. The differences just become even more striking.
The game was a mess, but at least we got some pretty characters from it.

It's more like Phoenix's game relies more heavily on comedic situations than Layton's ever does. There's normal, well-adapted, average-or-genius intelligence level characters in Phoenix's setting, they're just usually on the side that opposes him or doesn't provide aid to him. The games rely on the main character interacting primarily with idiots (Edgeworth's games too, though to a lesser extent than Phoenix's), so you have to fight past their lies and their faulty logic to gain the upper hand.
But it matters little, because judging from what you DO see, it does seem like everyone is an idiot that can't into logic.
I never felt like Layton's games tried painting anyone but Layton as an uber genius, though. I mean, most of the puzzles are freaking easy to solve (or rely on cheap tricks to keep the answer from being logic) and there's loads of characters who can't into them. So as far as background characters go, I'd say both series have bumbling idiots to the brim. It's the way the main characters are depicted in their settings which makes the clash so badly. Phoenix, as you say, is a butt monkey, while Layton is perfection incarnate.
