How would your opinion of Persona 4 differ if he was the real killer?

No, but I would actually like the game if he was the protag.
Playing as an awkward weirdo no one likes and having S Links be extremely difficult to build would make it so having ridiculously overpowered Personas was harder and more rewarding while actually taking the story in an interesting route too.
Adachi's whole speech at the end would be a lot better if the protagonist directly contradicted it by being a huge weirdo no one liked that build himself up by putting in the effort.
Plus if his dungeon was just some kind of weird vidya parody dungeon that ended with a doppelganger shadow battle, so it's very possible to believe some nerd who probably played Zelda II and has some self-loathing would be able to get through it and get a Persona at the end of it on his own, so the whole stupid "lmao a God just gave it to you out of sheer coincidence" thing could be dropped too.
It would make the protag feel less like a contrived chosen one who just gets super lucky because fate demands he be some bad ass while also making the whole dating aspect more appealing for waifufags since all the girls would have to be written to say things like "I thought you were a gross loser but you're actually super cool" so they can self insert better.

I don't think he should have been the hero, but I do think a game that's about facing the darkness in yourself and coming to terms with your flaws was really unforgiving to the one person who simply failed. The game just gave up on the dude who was in such a pit of despair that he would rather kill someone and take the fall for two other deaths than continue to exist with nothing. And the game just kind of gives up on him and says "Yeah, you're pretty worthless alright." There's not a lot of reflection on the topic. Even Adachi gets his chance to redeem himself, and his actions damn near killed a child.
So much for accepting yourself.
