Lack of content outside competing for gyms and collecting pokemon, which the game encourages you to train and put in a gym.
The game heavily favours the people who specifically put time and money aside for it. You spend money, you get more pokemon, your pokemon get stronger, you level up and find stronger pokemon, you get more of your pokemon into gyms, you get more stardust/pokecoins in return. If you didn't get to the top during the first week of launch, you'll never make it.
Normally I wouldn't mind, but there is literally shit all else to do other than collect pokemon and challenge gyms, and the collecting pokemon part is getting pretty boring.

I played it a little bit and I think the popularity will be short-lived. Unless you live in the middle of a huge city (and not even in dense suburbs), there isn't a lot of close Pokemon stuff like gyms or stops that doesn't require a ton of walking or driving to get to.
You mostly catch the same pokemon in your local area, and after you've seen 10 rattatas and pidgeys, it just isn't that cool.
Couple that with the fact that you are competing with the biggest, most autistic, poop-socking fanbase in existence, as a casual player you will never come close to owning a gym or any of the crap like that.
The game is a really fun idea, but lacking in execution unless you are fanatically devoted to it.

Because Pokemon Go is a great way to get outside and meet new people. I like to go for walks, but being able to catch pokemon and chat with fellow trainers while I'm walking makes the whole experience that much better. I've gotten into the habit of getting up early to go for a morning hunt and then going out again around 9 or 10 at night for my second hunt to catch the pokemon that only spawn at night. I've only been doing this for a week and I already feel a lot better physically than I did before. Exercise and fresh air are good for you.

I'm 30, and I've seen people of all ages playing this game. Everyone I've seen has been friendly and outgoing, at the very least asking what team you're on, while others actually make conversation. Hell, this morning a guy tapped me on the shoulder while I was doing a gym battle and asked what team I was on. The other day I went to campus to register for next semester's classes and nobody was around 'cuz it's summer. Afterwards was wandering around exploring the twenty something pokestops and two gyms on campus. A security guy was playing on his phone right next to a statue that was one of the gyms so I walked up, checked it on my phone and said 'Oh, the gym is blue. Are you team mystic?' and he was like 'Heck yeah man' and then I rode shotgun in his vehicle collecting pokestops while he showed me the best routes to take.

They do stack, but what helps more than incense is having more trainers around. The more people near a boosted pokestop, the more pokemon show up. Having friends with you is far more valuable than incense.
