There weren't female fighters. Even today mixed combat groups perform 40% worse than all male squads. There has yet been a woman who was able to complete special forces training. Requirements for female soldiers are less because there were so few capable of passing. It's ingrained in our psyche for millions of years that woman's lives are worth more than a mans and that cultures who did not follow this have dwindled or died out. Often men, trained men, will still go out of their way to pamper, save, ignore orders for women. Hence the reduced performance. There's a reason Olympics are separated by genders. Out side of a few events, women wouldn't even be making top 32.
