You guys do not understand how immensely fun fighting games are.

Once you get over that initial barrier to entry, they become one of the most satisfying, intense and fun genres to play. No matter whether I am winning or losing, I have the biggest smile on my face when I am playing.

I only started playing seriously a couple of months ago when Street Fighter V came out and everything just makes sense all of a sudden. I do decently well in online play as well.

I feel sorry for those disenfranchised with fighting games, because they are missing out so bad.
>>
Playing fighting games is less fun that watching them to me.

Whenever I play a fighting game online, I feel like every decision I make is the wrong one.

Fighting games are just a female chauvinist sport wherein spectators get to see which catty bitch has the more dexterous hands while betting obscene amounts of money on a match.
>>
>>345468448
So besides the dexterity thing it's like every other form of competition known to mankind.

Gotcha

>Using my sub against someone to practice and have fun
>Never win, but usually perform decently, taking a round here and there

Come on, man, not cool.
Once he started losing, he began blaming lag.

You have autism. There's literally nothing fun about fighting games.
That's why they pay autists to play them.

>>
I wish I found them fun but I can't.
I don't find anything enjoyable about having to remember retarded button combos just to perform one move.
It feels like such a slog to remember that stuff, and if you don't play the game every day of every week, you eventually forget all of that shit and you have to re-learn it again.
Fighting games are awful games that only people who are willing to pour hours of practice into can play.
You shouldn't need hours of practice and memory just to play a game casually.
>>
>>345468174
I played fighting games when they were kinda big in arcades back in the early to mid 90's, but I could never get good at them.
Nowadays I've become a fighting game literal cuck: I'd rather watch people more able than me play than play them myself.

>>345469026
You don't have to remember arbitrary strings of buttons. All you have to do is learn how to do a quarter circle and press punch.

It's like Skate, when you flicked the stick in a way to do tricks. It's not as hard as you're making it out to be. Honestly, if you want to be good at anything, you need some kind of practice.

How many times did you fail at Dark Souls before you learned how the controls worked and became good? It's the same thing.

>>345469147
It's the most recent popular fighting game. It's based around fighting game fundamentals, so, if you wanted to get into fighting games, I would say to go for Street Fighter 5, but have a friend to play with you so you can learn together.

SFV is so noob friendly it's boring, but it'll get better as capcom finish it. KOF will die quicker than SFV will but it might be worth a look - I think a demo is out soon on PS4.

Personally I would go SFV as there is already a pretty good community with tonnes of guides and information but whatever.

>>
How bad is the paywall in SFV? Are the characters stupidly expensive? I just think Alex looks cool.
>>
>>345469508
Fuck no it isn't casual friendly.

There are a shit load of tutorials in the game and ways to teach new people, but unless you know fighting game fundamentals, you are going to get fucked up while barely knowing what you did wrong or what even is going on.

It's a game based pretty heavily on Set play and Okizeme (wake up game), meaning that you'll get knocked down, then the enemy will set you up in a way that knocks you down again.

It's a fun fucking game when you know what you're actually doing, but holy fuck is it not for new players to the fighting genre.

>>345469707
The game isn't buggy in anyway. The load times are not insanely long as people claim, they're just a tiny bit longer than they should be, or compared to the old arcade games and SF4.

Being unable to remap controls however and there still being no PS3 stick support is pretty fucking stupid though.

People definitely overblew the games problems though.

SF4 had instant loading times on PC, it's not "slightly longer". Because that shit drastically reduces the number of matches you can do in a period. Especially if you're doing training room practice while looking

SF4 didn't have instant load times if I recall correctly, but they are better than SFV. It's bullshit, but whatever.

I wish it loaded instantly and had an arcade mode so I can play with my friends and just mash start to keep playing. They MAYBE could have some kind of patch/option that removes the world spinning animation and fade to white, or doesn't load the 3D models, but they probably never will.

Its not. Just friend people with good net/have good net yourself and you can get alot out of online play and have good sets. Stop playing ranked mode especially in games with crap netcode like SFV and you'll have less issues with this.

SFV GG even the new KI/MKL have solid netplay with two good connections. Only games like early KOFs have inherently bad netplay at max bars.

Start with command combos. You can find them in the command list. They are sequences of normals that don't need a link to connect, trial mode had required them too.

Watch a tutorial on youtube maybe, to learn what normal links into which special specifically.

The actual hard stuff in SFIV is that almost everything advanced, especially involving jabs, is a two frame link, but you don't need to learn those at the start.

After that, if you lose in story mode, it's understandable since the sf4 cpu cheats quite a bit, and cleanly punishes a particularly bad move every single time. This is a good thing, it helps you learn the matchup.

Yes and no.
The core mechanics are really solid, and its fun, but it can be really punishing if you play against someone better than you. Game is super fast.
I don't know how XRD plays, but when I played AC+ with my friends, and was shit,it was all about fishing for knockdowns, and then setting up more of them.

David Sirlin says in his book "Playing to Win":

>"ho knows what objective the scrub has, but we know his objective is not truly to win. Yours is. Your objective is good and right and true, and let no one tell you otherwise. You have the power to dispatch those who would tell you otherwise, anyway. Simply beat them."

Thus, since he is better than you at the game, what he has to say is worthwhile and means something. If you want your opinion taken seriously, beat him.

how will I learn faster online? there's no way to learn links other than repetition. I could practice other skills at the same time, but I would just get even more frustrated at losing to flowchart ken because I can't push buttons in order like the game wants me to.

>>345474989
I tried looking up simple combos on srk but I couldn't even do ones with 4-5 frame links. rythym games are the one genre I've never liked and never been good at, but for some reason fighting games have the same basic mechanics.
>>
>>345479864
You have no argument over than: "They are better than me because they put in more effort! What the hell! I should be good without doing anything!"

Which is why most games are shit now. They have to dumb everything down for people like you who don't want to put in any effort because it's "autism"
>>
>>345480113
Here is a nice little tip for you. You arent losing because you cant combo, you are losing becasue you are shit at the game and have no awareness of the neutral game.

You dont anti air, you cant space your normals properly and you cant tech a throw, this is why you are losing and its the core problem scrubs always face. They play fighting games and immediately try to learn the biggest most complex combos then cry when they lose and blame that. "I only lost because i didnt grind training mode for hours!" "Yeah its because dont wanna play a rhythm game fuck this"

Dont bother learning combos, pick ryu and just learn to play neutral. Try winning games only using only cHP and cMK with ryu, believe me this sounds hard but its very easy at low levels and will teach you the game better than spending days learning combos.
>>
>>345480734
That is some grade A advice anon.
>>
>>345478227
Yeah this desu senpai.

GG is great if you have a bunchh of friends that are all around the same play level, its a goddamn abomination that shouldn't exist if you play someone better, its pretty fast.
>>
>>345477448
it's literally impossible to do a full meter combo in street fighter, and in V you basically need a critical art to do even half bar damage

if by 'can hundred to zero you from one clean hit' you mean that they will put you into pressure that you have to deal with on wakeup, you might need to actually learn what their mixups are and how to block them correctly by playing against them more, holy shit, this is hard
>>
>>345481850
>>345480734
Best advice i've seen on /v/ in a long time, hell, i'd say i'm fairly confident at USF4 as Guile, and i'm lucky if i do 4 hit combo once during a match.

Combos are cool, but fundamentals win.
>>
>>345468174
I agree, fighting games are one of the most fun genres.

However, I didn't have to break any barrier to have fun, just play with my friends have fun between us and most importantly, completely avoid the FGC and the online retards.
>>
>>345482768
The amount of fun you have mashing buttons randomly with your friends is infinitely smaller than knowing what you're doing and playing with your friends.

Im interested doyou allconsider Tekken 3 and Tag Tournament 1(PS2 both) casual?Im talking about Japan version, its 3-4 times faster than PAL or NTSC version.
I played Samurai Shodown(all, even 3d version only for japan arcades), most SNK fighters, never did liked capcom fighters. Virtua Fihter meh, DOA went to shit when migrated on xbox, soul calibur until 2, maybe a little 3, later on i grew up.
Anyways, about Tekken 3 &TTT(PS2 JAP) ,do you consider it casual fighter(also, Eddie considered cheese to take) . Is there anyone old enough to play this game intensively ?
>>
>>345480734
I've read this advice millions of times. I did go in training mode and set the dummy to do stuff so I could practice jumping over fireballs and get used to how far my sweep would hit and shit. I wasn't losing neutral. I was losing because I would land a crouching short or something and then get dp'd every time. if you land a hit for 50 damage and then get reversal for 150 damage every time of course you're going to lose.
>>
>>345484490
>because I landed a crouching short
that's a jab
that's a link
do a command combo instead

>>345484197
They're the epitome of party game fighters that you can seat your inexperienced kids next to, and have them feel like they are accomplishing something. This is not a bad thing.

Tekken overall is a neat idea, (the entire game made of ground footsies and scrambles) but it has yet to be executed perfectly.

The main issue is that Tekken 3 is ridiculously touch-of-death if you know what you are doing, and some of the later installments are even worse. It was made in the time where you would just put awesome shit into your fighting game and not bother about balance. This is the issue with most Tekken games, but the trend with the latest ones, fortunately, was to make the high damage combos far more situational and far less actually damaging, so Fated Retribution is coming up a pretty balanced game.

Tekken Tag Tournament the first inherited most of the faults of 3, but TTT2 is easily the best Tekken game so far. Well, like half the cast in the game is pointless, but that's still better than many other pro games.
>>
>>345485347
>block DP
>Punish them with harder hitting attack now that they can't defend
>repeat
>win
there you go
>>
>>345485489
so at the end of the day you still aren't playing the character "correctly" and you'll have to learn links eventually.
>>
>>345485769
No. Where did I say that?
If you're playing Ryu and someone misses with a DP you can hit them with a hard punch and then cancel into shoryuken, or even just sweep them for good damage if you can't do a basic cancel.
You only really need links for higher levels of play
>>
>>345485769
they are making a mistake by mashing dp when they get hit by a low jab to begin with

you just did not recognize it as a mistake

a competent player will actually stop trying a link if he notices this, and will keep poke-jabbing them to bait out the dp, so that he can punish them with a non-prorated combo
>>
>>345468174
I find fighting games fun but I'm still the type of person that gets upset when they lose a lot or make stupid mistakes.
>>
>>345485934
I wasn't playing ryu. I don't want to play ryu. I have no interest in a game that forces you to play ryu to learn the game.

>>345485991
I was playing story mode so I don't doubt that the ai doesn't play optimally. if you were playing a human and knew he was going to block after every attack wouldn't you just throw anyway? the fact remains that playing fighting games without the ability to do links is like playing baseketball without being able to do a layup.
>>
>>345486787
>>I wasn't playing ryu. I don't want to play ryu. I have no interest in a game that forces you to play ryu to learn the game.
ok then do the same shit with whatever character you were using. A strong attack into a special. It's really not hard m8.
>>
>>345484490
You arent following my advice if you are getting hit by DP's because you are going for combos. Like i said, until you understand the game better you wont be able to combo because you totally lack confidence and will drop them even if you get a clean jump in.

The only way to get more confident is to improve and you will never improve if you remain stuck in this mindset. I'm a platinum ranked FANG and i rarely ever win by getting big damage off on anyone, anti airing, poking and punishing is always a great way to win.
>>
>>345486787
> I have no interest in a game that forces you to play ryu to learn the game.

Who are you playing then?
>>
>>345486963
understanding the game better doesn't magically give you the ability to do links. you're basically sayign that you can play basketball without being able to shoot and that somehow you'll learn it by playing pickup games.
>>
>>345487530
You don't need links. I hope you're just baiting.
>>
>>345487327
I tried seth for about 15 minutes but gave up because 360s were too hard even with the shortcuts. then I tried yun and spent a while practicing dive kick spacing, but I could never get the followup no matter how low I was hitting.
>>
>>345480734
>Yeah its because dont wanna play a rhythm game fuck this

What?
>>
>>345486787
If you're too retarded to learn how to use links without fucking up every time, play an anime fighter.
They usually use cancels instead.
>>
>>345487695
so your solution is to just not learn a big part of the game and then deny that it is a big part of the game?
>>
I was planing on getting KoF when it comes out and try to really get into fighting games
Or at least good enough so I can win a few games online
Is KoF a good beginner game? I messed about with the Android game a little and really liked playing as Yuri
Am I setting myself up for disaster? At what point would you say you could comfortably play online? When you can beat cpu in hard maybe?
>>
>>345485408
but if you have play ers of equal "powerlevel", im talking actual pro level a d then some .

I played probably any fighter to at least semi pro level released till ~2002.
(Except capcom, i just couldnt stand their phylosophy).
Anyway,IDK if something new stuff is released that changed order, but Last Blade 1&2,Samurai shodown #, TTT & T3( just fast JAP ver) felease that amount of andrenaline and qctually look crazy "epic" if you know how to play, you cant buttonmash at that level.
You really have to know how to play.
Maybe soul edge, calibur a little, but, those looked really amazing, people stopped and watched matches when absolute top tier players played. No other games were so layered and actualy looked like coreographed movies. Also instakill or 15 string combos are good only against beginners, or abusing in the air chars(IDK what idioms people use this days for those), but i dont know what other game came close to look that good combined with actual skill, to the point you have to master only one or two chars but must know to play with all if you want to play your mains optimal.

Are there any games that surpased those? I saw Tekken6 and it look horrible, im happy i quit fighters 15 years ago
>>
>>345489154
KOF is known for its really good neutral game and the fact that every character is viable. People like to say the games are difficult because preztel motions, double half circles, etc but those motions only exist for a few characters.

The new one (XIV) has online team play so 6 players go at it on 2 different teams and there's auto combos if you're not so good at doing combos. Still, you should your learn some basic bnbs and normals.
>>
>>345489154
I've only ever played SF, but being comfortable with a character and knowing a few basic attacks to chain was enough to start online. Online isn't like this massive hurdle full of 10/10 players, just like every game there are always people on your level or far worse.
>>
>>345489157
>Also instakill or 15 string combos are good only against beginners
Certainly not in Tekken 1-5.
The game's main problem overall was that the health bar is like half of what it should be.

Soulcalibur's problem is less being flat unbalanced with massive disjointed hitboxes, since the game does make a point of giving every character a way around aside of sidestep or whiff baiting. The main problem is its lack of depth. It's a fucking boring game, in which everyone is a gorilla and every mixup is 33/66 at best.

It has always felt like an anime clash mechanic would have profited the game a lot.
