Scams general?

The "tax department" keeps calling me on the telephone and telling me that I'm under arrest for tax evasion unless I buy $1000 in iTunes gift cards to pay them off.

website login is a basic phishing scam
URL, easy to detect with a "traffic program" that detects how many clicks the url has
a legit site has 100000 of em but a phishing site has like 200 or 300 but has the same url with a hidden coma or something in it
basically the scam that was professional lasted for 2 years and i stupidly trusted someone on the internet

When I was younger I was looking for a way to get free paid credits for Combat Arms (I don't even remember what they're called anymore).
Of course young me is pretty retarded so I believe everything I see on the internet, and so I found this one video on Jewtube advertising a program to do it. I download that shit expecting it to work, run it and a message pops up in the lines of "you shouldn't have tried this", followed by the disc drive on my PC starting to go apeshit.
Back then I still lived with my brothers so I freaked the fuck out cause it wouldn't stop and didn't want them to see I fucked up the computer. Long story short the task killed itself after a while and it stopped.

The one thing I got from that was being paranoid about any exe off the internet I guess.

I remember when the RMAH was a thing in D3 I got a perfect rolled Mempo, was so fucking happy that I couldn't help but brag in chat. This shit was easily worth $150+

Not even the next day, I had about 20 emails in my inbox all from "Blizzard Support" trying to phish my shit with fake sites, and even a couple of emails that was really from the actual Blizzard telling me there was 3 attempts to access my account that authenticator blocked. Predicatably, all 3 were chinamen

Didnt fall for that shit and didnt get my account jacked, but holy shit those fucks worked fast. Ended up selling the mempo without incident for almost $200, might have sold higher but I cant remember atm.

No but I've watched my friend be scammed right in front of my eyes.
He was selling his knife to some dude and he needed me to be the middleman according to the dood and he was allowed to have a friend be the middle man, I thought it was weird as fuck but I said I'd do it anyway, then since he wasn't fucking communicating with me properly, someone cloned my profile and took the knife from him without him noticing.
Like he didn't audibly indicate anything about the trade he was going through at all, if he'd had I could have been like "dude I'm not trading with you" but instead I'm just sitting there waiting for him and turns out he was being scammed.
Feel free to call me retarded too for not bothering to point out how fishy it was in the first place but it wasn't my knife so it wasn't my place to be careful so I didn't give it any thought really.

Steam saved me once by telling me a trade could not go through due to something wrong. The scammer had switched a skin out for the same skin but lower wear ($100 in difference) The idiot still tried to get me to trade him after I pointed out the error and I told him to fuck off. ALWAYS double, triple, quadruple check high value trades every second of the transaction and if Steam even says anything other than "trade accepted" then its a scam.

Fuck I use to play some pokemon MMO, it was some weird browser shit but kinda fun.

You could wander around the world but the page reloaded with each step, you used arrow keys to move but you could meet wild pokemon and npc trainers.
The online aspect was trading and I think perhaps battling.

Of course being an MMO it was a huge grind, you needed spend ages to get legendary pokemon or to level up.

So I logged onto some random forum related to the game and posted a fake ad.
Basically I said I could get you any pokemon and level any pokemon up to 100 instantly but you need to already have a level 100 pokemon.
All I needed was your account name and password, send it to this email.

The dumb fucks fell for it, I would get 10 or 20 emails a day, I even posted the same ad on the same forums multiple times and people would send their details even though they had tons of comments.

So when I got their account info, I would log in and trade all their good pokemon for level 1 craps I just caught earlier.
I had a ton of great level 100s and every legendary pokemon, I did not even need anymore but scamming people was just the fun off it.

12 year old me use to laugh at all the angry emails, some guy begged for his level 100 charizard back but I said no.
Then the game got taken down by nintendo, I think it was just around the time diamond/pearl were coming out but the game only had pokemon as far as ruby/saphire.

Fun times.

My grandparents almost got scammed. They thought I was kidnapped and held hostage in mexico and needed to send $1000 or something. My grandma got as far as the waiting line in the bank, but then my grandpa called me and the scam was avoided.

>>
>>345460227
That's a really common one. My grandmothers been called and told by someone claiming to be me that I was in jail and needed money wired to some random account to make bail.

Will admit some of the shit scammers have thought of is clever as fuck.

Probably the closest one was when someone adds your friend on Steam, says they're interested in trading. Then tell them to give the item to someone they trust to "make sure it's tradeable and legit, etc", a middleman in a way.

While all this is happening there's a 4th person behind the scenes quickly swapping their avatar to your friends, then they sit in a group chat with the "trader" while the trader tells you to give the item back.

Your "friend" invites you to trade through group to avoid adding, then you give back the item and they delete and run.

It's so easily flawed now. It use to be pretty common too apparently. Then they go full retard after they're busted and try to snag your avatar to trick your friend.

Could be worse honestly, I have a friend who spent somewhere between 300-600$ on league of legends
>>
>>345466464
That's clever. Good thing I neurotically nickname all my friends because it's hard to keep track of 100 people I barely know when at least one changes their name every week.
>>

Had something similar happen to my email.

I was waiting for a delivery that got delayed for a week. Get a random email saying "reply to me about your package"

Figured they might have fucked the delivery so I did. He replies with the old scam "pay 600 dollar in prepaid cards to the guvermint" so I ignored it.

But now I'm on their "this guy is a retard" list and game flooded with this shit every day. Spam filter gets most of them, but one gets through every day or two.

Yeah, it almost always fails because the scammer needs to private their profile to avoid suspicion, ironically. So you can easily just hover over the avatar to see if it's private with level 0

Not to mention the mandatory trade hold for non-mobile users will fuck them over too.

Couple times on MMOs.

Scammed in a trade with a similar looking item.
They trade you with the real item, then "accidentally" cancel the trade, but when you trade again with the guy the item is something that looks similar, but not what you wanted at all. And since you're probably getting a good deal you're rushing in your greed to finish it quick.

Joined a party "to test a skill damage" only to have the dude kill me. Nothing really uncommon, but you probably should only do this with your friends. Dude used the skill on me twice and killed me. Chased after him, but couldn't get him.

Oh there was also a time when my real friends tricked me with some texts from an unknown number and pretended to be someone I know from an MMO and I said some embarrassing things.

Probably some more I can't remember. I was 12-14 when most of this happened.

I tried to get out of trading altogether when it came to Valve games, but starting to play TF2 again suckered me back in to it.
I never spend a fuckload of money on keys or anything like that, just to be safe, I just sit around and trade low-cost cosmetics.

Used to scam people on Diablo 2

I would tell them they can dupe items or bring up a character editor or some shit if they typed /dnd username password.
I'd whisper them right after and hop on their account to drop shit.

No clue how people ever fell for that

>call store
>tell employee you are from corporate HQ and that you need to make sure prepaid cards are being authorized properly on the register
>tell them to scan a gift card
>ask them to type in $500 for the load amount and to tender it as cash, assure them you will void it afterwards
>ask them to read the number off the gift card so you can see if it authorized
>hang up

I've been on the internet since 2002 when I was 13 and I have literally never been scammed.
Once in 2005 I almost fell for one of those sites that promised GM powers in WoW if you entered your account name, password and email but I came to my senses.

That's why you don't recycle passwords between accounts you give a shit about. I tend to use the same super simple password between most throwaway bullshit accounts I use, but all the vaguely important ones use unique passwords with no relation
