The issue with Core2Quads is that they are really, really ancient. i7 920 may be old, but it's still a CPU that can be OC'd to 4ghz very easily, and has 8mo l3 cache.
I really hope AMD makes something good with Zen, and devs start using quad core more effectively.
No one on PC plays high demanding games so having the stronger shit doesn't matter when you're most likely playing outdated graphics like League or WoW or some other MMO.
The people who play Crysis and Battlefield and all that other Triple AAA garbage are rig/build testers and minorities.

Which games didn't run at 60? Only AAA I didn't play yet are rotr, hitman and 1 or 2 other Denuvo games.

A lot of that is due to the newer SSE and AES instructions. Even without that stuff Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge, and subsequent processors are clearly better but the biggest gains are from the additional instructions and clock speed advantages at stock.

I had an i7 960 a few years ago. Britty gud, I gave it to my brother when I built my new PC and it seems to run things pretty well still.
CPU is in a way the least important part of a PC these days since most games are GPU intensive.

Dolphin in DX12 mode runs pretty well with FX8350.
With a R9 270X 4gb I can easily get full speed at 3x native rendering on most games.

I actually got a 5650 on my asus sabertooth, runs 4.4 on 4 cores and turbos to 4.6 on 2 cores. Rock stable at 200 bclk. Actually runs a fuckton cooler than my 920 did, even with the 2 extra cores.

My gtx 760 was a fucking mistake, and its 2gb of ram way too little. Doom runs at rock bottom settings even with vulkan and Witcher is around 45 exploring, and 22-35 when I'm fighting lots of npcs.

go into bios, boost baseclock my 5-10 increments, run some program like prime 95 that does really intense math for a decent amount of time.
Some say to run it for like 24 hours but thats if you want to be 100% sure you're stable.
Just run it for like 5 mins and if its good, go back to bios and increase it. When you bluescreen, that means your CPU needs more voltage to push higher clocks.
Too much voltage is what will actually kill you processor, but you can safely increase the voltage in tiny increments to keep raising the clockspeed.
To optimise your shit you see how little voltage you need to maintain the clockspeed you want.
Your shit will not blow up. There are thermal failsafes on chip.
