What happened was that the only reason why anybody played MM/Wizardry games in the first place was because the alternative was pong. Unfortunately instead of modernizing old school complex RPG mechanics with modern UIs, visuals (even modern 2D visuals would be nice) and sound design they instead decided to just make everything a lot dumber. Now the only people who can stand the old school games are those who played them during their formative years or those who are really thirsty for a "big" RPG game and can just barely stomach the old school games.
