>>
http://therightstuff.biz/2012/12/01/the-god-haters/

Is there a more crude beast than the modern atheist? Can we find a more intellectually offensive specimen than an individual who has wrapped his grubby hands around a singular idea, and thrust his sniveling nose upwards in contemptuous pride at this accomplishment, never to think for himself again, blissfully assured in his conclusions? Why even the theists are haunted by the specter of doubt! Yes these vile, blathering simpletons proceed without the slightest humility, so faithful they are of their rash conclusions, so unthinking are they of the implications. Nowhere do you find a more dogmatic and arrogant faux-intellectual than the modern atheist.

Jesus could have been a totally normal dude who definitely existed.
Whether or not he was magical is where you could argue it's fabricated.

Not him, but there's Tacitus' "Annals"
>Consequently, to get rid of the report, Nero fastened the guilt and inflicted the most exquisite tortures on a class hated for their abominations, called Christians by the populace. Christus, from whom the name had its origin, suffered the extreme penalty during the reign of Tiberius at the hands of one of our procurators, Pontius Pilatus, and a most mischievous superstition, thus checked for the moment, again broke out not only in Judæa, the first source of the evil, but even in Rome, where all things hideous and shameful from every part of the world find their centre and become popular. Accordingly, an arrest was first made of all who pleaded guilty; then, upon their information, an immense multitude was convicted, not so much of the crime of firing the city, as of hatred against mankind.
>>
>>345424832

Why is it that every non believer must immediately believe that all mysticism of the past strictly never happened. Somehow, the possibility that these events did happen and are totally scientifically explainable but it was misinterpreted by the people at the time due to their ignorance is always ruled out.

I'm one of the people who believes that shit happened, just not that it was gods magic or some shit.

More likely some really smart guys figured shit out and people misinterpreted it. For example, there's no reason wizards of legend didn't just figure out some things about chemistry and engineering, and use it under the pretense of magic.

That's exactly what I believe happened most of the time. "Wizards" were just the scientists of back in the day. Doesn't help that science was taboo most of time for religious/superstitious reasons, so it gets even more mystified.

Because when it comes to texts like this, they try to assert the greatness of their "god" by pointing to this mysticism as proof. This proof is only valid as a sign of greatness if the description is accurate (as in their deity actually did something supernatural). If its something else, then either their text is fallible or their deity is deceitful. Since no believer will ever agree with either of these conditions, all that can be done without shutting down the conversation is to take the text at it's word, and go from there.
>>
>the name of the game is an anagram for an important plot element or big twist

Ha, you think atheists are bad, get a load of nihilists. They somehow manage to be even worse when it comes to thinking their beliefs are objective and want everyone to know about it.
>>
>>345426381
Invent a device that allows you to do so.

It's not impossible, just very very hard.
>>345426287
Well of course it's a TV show, they need to make money by baiting people with exaggerated claims. Just like modern journalism. Plus, it's convenient disinfo in case there actually IS any truth behind it.

Either way, there's more than enough evidence to suggest the ancients knew much more than we give them credit for. That's why I'm not willing to fully dismiss these ideas. Even if they didn't build a full blown hydrogen plant, they could have been TRYING to with their primitive technology and understanding. That's already amazing.

>>345426401
That's only if you're debating with a believer. You can look at the texts for yourself and try to rationalize it with the modern knowledge you have.

So many of the things in those text sound like modern technologies we have, or futuristic technologies we hope to one day conceive. Now we call it "scifi".

>And now Caesar, upon hearing the death of Festus, sent Albinus into Judea, as procurator. But the king deprived Joseph of the high priesthood, and bestowed the succession to that dignity on the son of Ananus, who was also himself called Ananus. Now the report goes that this eldest Ananus proved a most fortunate man; for he had five sons who had all performed the office of a high priest to God, and who had himself enjoyed that dignity a long time formerly, which had never happened to any other of our high priests. But this younger Ananus, who, as we have told you already, took the high priesthood, was a bold man in his temper, and very insolent; he was also of the sect of the Sadducees, who are very rigid in judging offenders, above all the rest of the Jews, as we have already observed; when, therefore, Ananus was of this disposition, he thought he had now a proper opportunity. Festus was now dead, and Albinus was but upon the road; so he assembled the sanhedrin of judges, and brought before them the brother of Jesus, who was called Christ, whose name was James, and some others; and when he had formed an accusation against them as breakers of the law, he delivered them to be stoned: but as for those who seemed the most equitable of the citizens, and such as were the most uneasy at the breach of the laws, they disliked what was done; they also sent to the king, desiring him to send to Ananus that he should act so no more, for that what he had already done was not to be justified; nay, some of them went also to meet Albinus, as he was upon his journey from Alexandria, and informed him that it was not lawful for Ananus to assemble a sanhedrin without his consent. Whereupon Albinus complied with what they said, and wrote in anger to Ananus, and threatened that he would bring him to punishment for what he had done; on which king Agrippa took the high priesthood from him, when he had ruled but three months, and made Jesus, the son of Damneus, high priest.

Actually you can get a lot of information that was lost in the 50-100 mark from the finals remnants of available sources. "El Inca" Garcilaso de la Vega famously pinpointed and located old, abandoned, and forgotten villages and towns along with much more information from the people that used to be a part of the Incan Empire. Read his chronicles on it. It's very interesting.

I get that you are a modernfag, and think records would be made. And thats why I pity you.

>Garcilaso de la Vega
Isn't even outside of the 50+ year frame. By standards, he is in the 5 year frame. He is litterate, and he wroten down oral tradition.
By those qualifiers, he is in the same class as Asbjornsen and Moe, Brothers Grim and other oralwriters.
Which also means he didn't "document" jack shit, because documentation is something entirely different.

Like C.S. Lewis said. You either treat Jesus as legit Messiah or a crazy motherfucker. Trying to make Him (((realistic))) is turbo stupid.
>>
>>345428754
Actually here's an interesting tidbit that's slightly related. Caligula once heard of a man who walked on water and rose from the dead. Since he couldn't rise from the dead he decided to try walking in water. He succeeded in doing so, and news if hiw he did it didn't come out until after his death because he gave orders that if the locals who saw it did tell, their homes would be destroyed along with the whole settlement. How did he do such a magnificent act? He put boats in a line from one cliffside to another cliffside and started walking across the boats.
>>
>>345429073
>(((realistic)))
is this a new meme?
>>
>>345428890
>Calling a renowned and well respected chronicler
The problem here, is that "a well respected chronicler" is just that. He isn't a magic history dude who spoke to the dead.
He was a cool history dude who bothered to write down oral traditions, because the people who was a part of history wasn't dead yet.
He excavated because it was cool, and he could ask for directions.

And that is the problem. He is a " renowned and well respected chronicler". Not your magical bird shit.
And then the problem: The original claim was "There are contemporary sources about Jesus of Nazareth, as The Messiah, in a age where documentation was not common". Basically there isn't anything like that, the documentation only shows it was a age where there was lots of prophets.

As for why their paintings are autistic, you'll have to ask an Art History major on the history of perspective.

Not really. Christians were pretty much like today's SJWs if you go back in time a bit. SJWs are culturally Christians. They've adopted their oppression complex, and their obsession with equality, and siding the worst scum of society, while scorning the wealthy and successful in society. They just dropped the religious aspect because they realized religion had lost out in the west.

Politic and religious bodies still use their own brand of history to push their agenda. Not him, but the legend of the Holy Grail itself is of the cup that Christ drank from at the last supper.

If you remove Christ and Christianity from the equation, then the Grail would be a completely different legend. Why call it the Holy Grail at that point?

It would be like having a sword called Excalibur in a setting where there was never an England, King Arthur, Merlin, Knights of the Round Table, etc. You're just using the name for no real purpose.

They don't talk about conMEN, they talk about conMAN. And of course it hasn't been properly recorded, even if it had, every denomination would still just cherry pick what they like and pretend that's ALL he said. My argument is that Jesus, the preacher, the person whom Christianity exalts as a deity, whom various religions, ideologies and records acknowledge, lived, died, and most importantly existed.

Because the legend is so widely popular, man.

If you introduce an item called the Holy Grail in a game, leave the player to assume it is actually connected to the story of Christ and the Last Supper, and then explain that the legend behind it is something completely separate from any kind of Christian mythology, it would be jarring. You would be saying "Why the fuck is it called the holy grail?"

I mean it may suck for writers, but the name "The Holy Grail" is effectively reserved.

There are enough independent sources talking about jesus that historians agree that he actually existed.

Also you can clearly tell where the story has been altered to make the historcial jesus fit the biblical narrative. Shit like Jesus of Nazareth being born in Bethlehem. Clearly proves the historical Jesus was from Nazareth but gospel writers would have much rather had him born in Bethlehem so he fits the prophecy. If Jesus was fictional they would have just said he was from Bethlehem to begin with.
>>
>>345433378
>Arthurian legend isn't fiction.

>>
>>345432513
What you are thinking is a theologian's way. The bible is fictional. You cannot say "This guy match the fictional description of our son of god. He must be the factual son of god." Theology goes nowhere.

Scientifically you cannot prove his existence either. For many hundreds years in its hay day, Christianity "canon" constantly evolved, much like fairy tales (because it is). What form of Christianity they practiced back then is very likely not what we do to day. That's why Jesus is a Jews and we are Catholic. All this stuff influenced and bastardized the factual, recorded history of it. To the point where it's impossible now to determine exactly whether he was was real or just an imagined figure.

I'm not saying that I believe he doesn't exist. I want to point out that it's impossible to tell whether he existed at all.

Tacitus documents there is:
1. A general Jewish unrest
2. Jews want a new prophet/messiah
3. There is people trying to be Prophet/Messiah
4. There was cases where Romans decided to dick around to prevent further Jewish separation or unrest

What isn't documented is:
1. Jesus of Nazareth himself
2. If early Christianity merged severeal Messiah figures and prophets into Jesus Christs attributes and deeds
The latter is a field of debate, which could not be tread upon before early 1900s.

Vampires tend to be evil because they're predators who view sentient beings as prey.

Liches tend to have been ruthless and merciless in their quest for immortality, killing anyone who got in their way and sacrificing the innocent for selfish goals.

The raising of the undead by a necromancer is seen as an evil act because you are using the remains of others to do with as you please, often against the wishes of society in general.

This isn't a terribly complicated question, anon.

>Never mention religion anywhere
ftfy,
It literally always causes a shitstorm of faggots to fight, and it's not even funny. It's just:
>HURR DURR, MAGICAL SKY DADDY IS NOT REAL, HERE'S THIS ONE PASSAGE I GLANCED AT THAT MAKES YOU LOOK BAD
>LMAO, FEDORA HAT, ATHEIST KEKS LITERALLY BELIEVE THINGS JUST HAPPENED
>URR DURR FLYING SPAGHETTI MEME, ANYONE WHO'S SMART BELIEVES WHAT I BELIEVE ONLY BECAUSE U CANT PROVE, MUH BURDEN OF PROOF MS PAINT COMICS
>CATHOLICS>PROTESTANT KEKS
Every time, fuck you guys. /pol/ race and gender shitflinging is so much more fun.

It's open for debate. there isn't really a consensus.

My Medieval History lecturer has suggested that I do my dissertation on the topic. He told me about a couple of the theories he's read.

There's a lot of shit ranging from
>Snails representative of sin
>Snails specifically slothful and greedy
>Snails are garden pests that eat through crops, in a time when agriculture was majorly suffering what seems like a mundane silly animal to be afraid of for us could have been a sign that you were about to starve and your crops were fucked.
>Snails are insulting stand-ins for the "enemy"
>>
>>345442783
maybe snails were just fun to draw
>>
>>345442619
On top of that, look at /his/. You can clearly see & Humanities was a mistake.
>That one fag who barges into religion thread to make sure everyone knows that religion is not logical
>>
>>345442817
maybe, they clearly have some importance or cultural meaning that got lost along the way or they'd not be so prevalent.

In a lot of books of the period they appear everywhere, usually being "fought" by knights as you can see in this thread.

>year 1000
>lol give me a proof that god exists
>Earth is in the center of the world, only the god could create something so perfect. ALSO BURN YOU FUCKING HERETIC
>year 1500
>lol give me a proof that god exists
>Sun is in the center of the world, also only the god could create all this shit. ALSO BURN YOU FUCKING HERETIC
>year 2016
>everyone knows how everything came to be
>we still don't know what caused the Big Bang
>WOW THE WORLD DIDN'T JUST HAPPEN ALSO I-I BET YOU HAVE A FEDORA!
>>
>>345442783
do they ever show knights doing those sort of things with other allegories? all of those things sound really weird to me.

surely demons are better and more impressive representations of sin.
surely knights aren't ever really associated with agriculture
surely they could just show knights stabbing the usual arab and french guys as they do in countless other examples
>>
>>345443010
>implying we'll ever know what caused the thing that created the thing that caused the Big Bang etc.
>implying things just happened
>implying we even exist
Face it fag, there had originally be an effect without a cause to make us. Nothing exists.
>>
>>345423945
The (secular) reasoning amounts to
>Early Christians existed
>the cult probably didn't spring up from nowhere
>their leader wasn't dead very long, him existing is the most likely explanation
The most likely explanation is that Jesus existed in some capacity. When you start to get into the details of his life, that's when the faggotry begins.

>Why are they all fighting snails
They knew the horrors. A single snail could make the world go extinct.
>>

You see you're looking at it through a modern perspective.

If we look at Europe at the time these types of illustrated manuscripts were becoming popular. where you've got mass famine across northern and central europe, black plague and schisms in the church.

You're talking about a time in which people believed medicine should be taken based on star-signs and based around the four humours.

Fighting arabs was a distant thought due to the fact that in answer to one of your questions knights often aided in agricultural work, especially those that were merely local in renown or poor, not many could just wander the lands and fight justice or whatever bullshit ideals you can think of.

Knights helped farm, helped hunt etc. they're not a secular order, they were heavily involved in most aspects of medieval life, Particularly during Famine or peacetime the only thing seperating a low income knight from a serf is that a serf could at least have a reliable food distribution from their lord of the manor assuming he wasn't incompetent whereas many knights had to rely on their own poor land plots amongst other things.

from modern eyes feudalism is archaic and oppressive and to be fair it's true, but its important to remember that it served a purpose and kept the poorest alive so long as they worked for their lord

so to illustrate to illiterate yokels, you draw snails? do you think stupid country folk are any different now than they were then?
>>
>>345424115
>We don't know, there are no primary, contemporary sources mentioning Jesus

Except there are and you are a fucking retard
>>
>>345444004
which ones
>>
>>345443801
Again you're not seeing it in context of the time.

It's not poor illiterate yokels. Books and manuscripts aren't widely produced things you can buy at market for cheap, they're not for poor landworkers.

They're for the prestigious aristocracy and scientists and philosophers of the time (the church).

But a snail is a sign that meant enough to the highest echelons of society through to the writers and artists of these manuscripts. Almost everyone in england and france felt something about snails that made them antagonistic, if you look at the most basic thing of all in that snails are creatures that are garden pests and eat crops and produce then it doesn't seem so unlikely that at a time when famine and agriculture was so important that if you're harvest failed or underperformed you were fucked and risk starvation it seems likely that they're popularly considered a bad thing that needed to be "fought" and had significance attached to their form because of this

>Mention his persecution under Pilate

Funny how tippers can't even fucking read despite how enlightened they claim to be.
>>
>>345444232
Thats pretty stupid reasoning. I find actual giant snails invading more likely.
>>
>>345444518
Ironically tippers don't read sourced material and just rely on the accounts of other writers to form their opinions for them :3
