OK anons I just started pic related because apparently its one of the best RPGs ever made, but I dont know what the fuck am I doing, theres absolutely no tutorials and I obviously dont have the instruction booklet.
Why does my character glows pink/purple periodically?
Why do some enemies just randomly explode like 10 seconds after being hit?
Why do I sometimes inflict 0 damage on enemies when hitting them multiple times? Or they take damage seconds after I hit them.
Is there a way to dodge enemy spells/skills? They seem to be auto targetted.
How the fuck do I equip armor? I select the piece I want and I double tap B but its still not equipped.
I really want to love this game, but it feels like one of those games were you only discover/understand how to do 10% of the stuff and so it hurts the overall experience

Anon your character glows because he's ready to hit again. You cant spam the attack button in this game, if you do your subsequent attacks will barely deal damage (like stamina in oblivion). The glow happens when your character is "charged" to attack again.

Glow means you're ready to attack.
Might just be a lag thing, never really figured this one out.
Because you can't spam-attack. You have to let the gauge under your hp refill before you swing or you'll do shit damage.
Nope, you have a chance for it to miss but that's it.
When you select the armor it'll flash, select it again and the character's face will appear next to it. Also each type of armor is only for one of the three characters, so you can't just buy the cheapest shit of the same type for everyone.

Been years since I last played, but from memory that should be related to attacking. After you make an attack, your gauge on the bottom will count back up to 100%. Attacking while it's charging back up will deal minimal damage.

Slightly related to death animations. If you make multiple attacks, they're all queued up, and each one will proc in sequence. Since it takes a second or two for each attack to process, having a lot of them queued up can result in what you just described.
The 0 damage is a separate issue. Enemies have weaknesses, resistances, and immunities. If they're taking 0 damage, try a different element spell, or switch weapons.

No way to dodge. It's just random. You get Dryad late game though and she's got a Wall spell which reflects spells.

You're not supposed to spam attacks. If you don't wait for their bar to get back to 100% before attacking you'll usually do shit damage. That's what the purple flash signifies.

The game only tallies up damage when the enemy is in certain states. Usually when knocked down you can still hit them, but the damage isn't tallied until they get back up.

Dodging is random. Magic's unavoidable, but you can move away from physical attacks.
Also, the game's buggy as fuck and you'll sometimes have stuff happening that simply doesn't make sense.

Secret of Mana 2 does exist. It is Seiken Densetsu 3 and never got a USA release.

Crystal weapons are the strongest stuff in the game, somethin like 70 to all stats in a weapon, plus 50 ALL Element power.

You could also summon a character form someones else save data. Said character doesn't lv up or anything but you can learn his skills faster if you don't have them, I think.

Not only does it have a poor translation, even for that era, it's not exactly very intuitive either, from the menus to the combat system, which is cool once you get into it, and it opens itself up to co-op play. That said, there's so many other games now that do what Secret of Mana did but better, even from the same era, like Legend of Zelda, Alundra, or Magic Knight Rayearth for the Saturn, and more recently like Bastion and Hyper Light Drifter.

The combat sucks pretty hard.
Later it becomes somewhat turnbased since all you have to do is go to the menu to select spells and items and bosses pretty much only do spells themselves. This also destroys the multiplayer since every player constantly pauses the game for the others when going to the menu.

SD3 definitely my favorite.
Legend of Mana looks good and has an incredible soundtrack, unfortunately it's also incredibly buggy, combine this with the not so obvious story progression mechanics and getting on the story path you want to get on can be near impossible without a guide.
It also really doesn't support multiplayer as well as previous entries which is a real shame.

The android port of secret of mana is actually not bad at all. Some notable differences which I noticed is that they show the actual names of the heroes, dashing seems to be multi directional, portraits in the menus and different animations when walking.

I wanted to like Secret of Mana but the shoddy hit detection really fucked me over. Sometimes you can hit people while they're casting a spell, other times you can't. Sometimes your AI buddies hit an enemy and cause your charged attack to whiff because they get recovery frames. You can occassionally get stunlocked to death by a pair of enemies, too.

You can easily see it on the bottom where you health is... Once you swing it goes back 0% meaning less chance to hit and less strength on attack. When you don't swing for awhile, it quickly refills back to 100%. Meaning the next attack will most likely hit for 100% of your strength.

This is considered among the best rpgs ever made because it was
1. action rpg, which wasn't common in the sea of turn based rpgs
2. TWO PLAYERS. Yes you can plug in a second controller and have a friend control another character. Don't think any other action rpgs did this at the time.
I bought this game for IOS, but im wondering if i should just emulate it instead to get a better experience, the ios controls can be annoying, but i like the visual style
