The Lich King is the closes thing to a death god (Go fuck yourself Yogg'saron) and have the holy trinity thing going to it: The body, Arthas. The Spirit, The helm and armor that houses Ner'zhul, and the Sword Frostmourne which had a primal hunger for souls. The sword has the strongest driving force of all three parts. After Arthas kicked Ner'zhul out of the helmet the only voice he heard was the fucking sword.
The sword made him do it. Ner'zhul wanted freedom and a fighting force to match the legion, Arthas was lead on by the sword.

Ner'zhul is the Lich King, bound to the Frozen Throne by one of the Legion's big three for fucking up Draenor. As it happened, Ner'zhul didn't care much for demons and they knew it, so they stuck some Dreadlords in to keep him under control.
The Human Campaign of TFT showcases the Ldgion attempting to build up the Scourge and destabilize the Human's biggest power bade by causing internal political chaos. This allowed the Scourge to obliterate most of Lordaeron swiftly under Arthas, and summon Archimonde to Azeroth
Archimonde gets axed, and Ner'zhul sees his chance to win out (But not before Illidan fucks him up a tad bit and begins the leak of his powers.). Arthas gets called back to Northerend to assist him, and in the npend merges with him by putting on the Helm.
Ner'zhul tries to subjugate Arthas but a turnabout occurs, and Ner'zhul becomes trapped in Frostmourne. Forstmourne is just an enchanted sword mpthat can harvest and hold souls. Nothing more.

He's Neutral right now, leaning towards good. He's already started trying to forcibly raise people, it's the entirety of the DK story in Legion, all the way up to an attempt at Tirion himself.

The whole theory is that Kel'thuzad will be the DK's ultimate champion, since we never got his Phylactery after WrathNaxx. He'll serve the same role for us that he did for Arthas, as advisor, mentor, and ally.
Anub'arak, however, is supposedly being set up for the Old God expansion for when Azjol-Nerub gets expanded on. He never really cared for the Lich King, and it sort of shows. Letting him off the Arthas Leash will just get him bigger and better.
