Why is magic so shit in Fates?
Everyone told me it was OP, but my magic units die to melee units really easily and enemy mages are easy to take down, especially since most of their spells have such a low hit chance.
Leo is the only magic user who seems to be actually decent since he has some survivability.
In Awakening magic was powerful but it feels like it's been nerfed to hell in this game.

Awakening magic was actually hilariously overpowered. Because of that they made it nearly useless in Fates. Mages have always been easy to take down but now most of them have garbage speed and are blind as bats. Also, the introduction of Ninjas and Maids/Butlers don't help them since a physical damage dealer fast ranged unit with high RES is a mage's worst nightmare.
Fates is Sniper Emblem. If you want ranged units definetly go for Sniper or Bow Knight.

The royals do make the difficulty a bit of a joke, yes. If you want to challenge yourself, don't use them, except Corrin, obviously.
Niles and Mozu are pretty indispensable due to the lack of Archers in Conquest and their strength in general. Silas and Effie are excellent tanks. They have low speed but give them a forged iron or steel weapon and they can 1 shot weaker units. The ladies that show up in Chapter 10, Selena and Beruka, are pretty solid, well-rounded units as well. Felicia with a flame shuriken is your premier tank killer, since tomes suck against generals now and both of your mages have low skill anyway.

Good enough to go out of your way for, and Keaton's not a bad unit either. She's one of the better kids, so giving her a high-priority mom like Camilla is a good idea. Plus, her stats mesh well with the Wyvern Rider class that Camilla gives her access to. Marrying Camilla to Keaton also lets her access the Berserker class for Axefaire. Honestly, they're practically made for each other.
