Make the game very difficult when piracy is detected. If they can get through insane odds, they've earned the right to pirate it.
>>
>>345395054
Making everyone extremely ugly. Everyone has two models, regular and extremely ugly.

If it is detected that you're using a pirated copy, everyone will be extremely ugly and use the extremely ugly models.

And I mean buttfuck ugly. Scrunched noses, manjaws, acne everywhere, deformed eyes, burn scars, tits that sag down to the knees. Everyone will look like they were the result of 200 years of inbreeding before being stuck in a flaming blender.

And the best part is that the player will create their character at the beginning, and they'll be applied with a status effect that makes them progressively more horrific to look at over time.

Also, random screamers. I will implement this in a completely different way than the ugliness, such that, once the ugliness is bypassed, everyone will THINK it's working totally fine, so it remains undetected until suddenly an extremely loud and shocking flashing screamer just erupts in out of nowhere, at a completely random interval, such that it will be extremely difficult to tell if any potential bypass is working or not and it will catch everyone when their guard is down.

Release our own "Pirate Version" on torrent sites with an option to buy the game and retain your progress on the main menu.

An act of goodwill, but also make it easier for pirates to buy the game if they enjoy it.

Also probably wouldn't bother to release as many updates to the pirate version, or release pirate DLC, as additional impetus to buy.

I wouldn't include any piracy methods or even a mention of it at all, and refuse to speak about it.

Anytime someone mentions anti-piracy measures, change the topic until the discussion is over, and especially don't put up stupid "this game has no DRM, so please support us guys!" messages in the game.

Eventually people will assume it either has none, or some sort of secret DRM that you have to trigger (like how Earthbound would delete your savefiles if you died on the last boss).

Make it very accessible with solid customer support, along with a fair price assuming I have control over that. Include cool perks where possible online, make cool physical stuff for actual boxes such as maps, artbook etc.

Code pirated version to have tiny "bugs" in them that don't break/hinder any of the game but are just plain weird/funny as hell, so much so that people delight to share them. Make them variate so that people actually have a reason to share their own variant of the bugs, increasing the amount of people showing off their pirate-exclusive bugs. Never actually tell anyone that they are pirate-exclusive bugs, but imply that a fix is on the way. If people get rowdy about them to the point of giant threads, release that it's a pirate exclusive bugset.

Jumpscare at the maximum volume the system is capable of producing.
Leaves a virus/whatever the fuck that causes the jumpscare to happen at a random time each month.
When you try to remove that then it starts to do shit like pic related in order to fuck with your eyes.
When you try to remove that then it bricks your machine.

Release a pirate version day one before any pirates can release their own, and have the pirated version gimped or extremely difficult to progress through. Pirate groups won't bother releasing a game that has already been put up on pirate sites, and pirates won't be able to play the full game.

Guilt trip the pirates into buying it by being cool about it but claiming regrets that they can't update it trough the proper channels, even going as far as to seed patches for pirated copies so they can get a better experience out of it.
Also, I wouldn't nickle and dime DLC, I'd release proper expansion packs and a remaster for free further down the line for people who already bought the game.

The misunderstanding of this term is ridiculous in the game industry. Lost Sales =/= Theft. Pirates aren't going to fucking pay for the game anyway in the overwhelming majority of cases, so fingering them as a damaging variable that needs to be excluded is pants-on-head retarded and always hurts the main consumer base, generating even more lost sales.
Literally the only way to overcome piracy is to make your product so attractive that hordes of people will buy it, outweighing inevitable lost sale opportunities. Unsurpsrisingly, this isn't an issue even for tiny dev teams that manage to make not shitty games.

This was kind of funny but do the Game Dev Tycoon creators really think that pirates have absolutely no effect on how well a game does?

Like I occasionally pirate games, and I'm not going to lie, I haven't bought every single game that I liked after pirating. But I do spend a decent amount of money on games, and I also talk to people about the games I like.

If I did pirate this game and had it do this to me, I would have just thought it was a shitty game and then I never would have touched it again.

It seems like game developers view "pirates" as a mass of people who are just a black hole that they can get no value out of whatsoever. People who pirate do buy games, and they also have an effect on games. It seems silly to immediately shut out that portion of potential marketing/money with a stunt like this.

Make the game extremely easy. Like so easy that it's not even worth playing, enemies don't attack, all doors are open, shit like that.

The same music plays for everything, make it a short tune that isn't annoying, but very repetitive.

Add NPC bugs that make it so that they can't navigate very well, they do the wrong things with commands, and they are slow.

Mislabel everything. So the item you need to get is actually this item, which is actually that item, which is actually the item you need for this segment.

yeah, the only way to avoid the whole strong copyprotection vs mods seems to be to have mod support good enough to make engine modifications unnecessary. Warcraft III sort of achieves this with JAZZ(blizzard's scripting language) which seems to be quite powerful.
Papyrus doesn't seem as powerful from what I've heard. Also, apparently a ton of framework mods are required, FNIS(Animations) and SkyUI come to mind. There needs to be some way to have configurations, wether they are ingame in the options menu or in a .txt file i don't care, but Bethesda doesn't provide this, so every mod depends on SkyUI

Good job faggot, now the pirates are going to spoil the game for everyone else on Venetian Animation Boards and reddit. You fucking idiot. IS THIS WHAT YOU WANTED? FOR NO ONE TO PLAY YOUR GAME?

Hire thugs to break pirate's knees.
Alternatively, do what Alan Wake did and just make the main character appear with an eye-patch ingame

Make the game change completely if pirated. Everybody starts talking in sailor voices and whatnot, the plot gets dropped in favor of looting, and everybody gets pirate outfits.
It'd be a lot shorter than the main game but would act as a comedic demo.

The OST is removed and replaced with this for every song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNRcYf06iMs

But the beat is replaced with farts

>Random Screamers
>At any time the game can spawn a Meteor that will land on you and kill you in one shot, happens randomly
>The fishing minigame is modified so you have to wait 3x as long for a fish
>Every single allied NPC will now move faster than you walk but slower than you run
>Map markers will also be labeled incorrectly and fast travel will bring you to a random spot
>Game crashes at final boss and deletes your save
>If the game detects you spend more than 10 minutes in character creation, it automatically randomizes the character
>Every 30 seconds you will be reminded that wolves hunt in packs
>The pirated version will however have all wolves removed
>Any items you place in your houses will be stolen by roaming hobos, the game will generate 30+ hobos with no indication of which one has your items
>Your hitbox is 2x as big for enemies to hit

basically just throw so much shit together that it'd be a hell to deal with
>>
>>345421862
Those are good ideas. I like messing with the gameplay mechanics as anti-piracy. Make every mission an escort mission with NPCs that move faster than your walk speed but slower than your run speed. Or the game plays normal for a bit but then turns into Undertale.

Best way is to let people play normally for an hour or even two, then have progress blocked by a missing item or something subtle that they couldn't know until the roadblock. When they complain on the forum, politely reveal why it's broken.

Make Denuvo even HARDER to crack and throw in some always online shit.

Make the game SO fucking hard to crack that pirates spend several months trying to crack the game and develop work-arounds.

This will allow companies to enjoy the majority of sales from the first few weeks/months.

Everybody wins; except the pirates.

And just like IRL pirates, they just couldn't sustain themselves in a new and changing world/technologies.

Add very creative counter-measures that would make the game extremely hard if not downright unplayable if pirated.

Stuff like the hot chick turning into a very old hag when you are about to bang her or a invincible pink scorpion guy that moves as fast like Flash and is immune to bullets.

Or in a RTS game. The AI has cheat mode by default, has infinite resources and from the start can churn out the most powerful units and has all the upgrades from the get-go.

Pirated versions get a friendly unkillable NPC to guide them through the game. It does no hostile damage, it is always just over your shoulder, and it doesn't interact with terrain

It steadily multiplies until it's a cacophony of 'Hey, try pressing that button' or 'Hey, watch out for that bad guy, I'm sure he's going to try something'

Or, the pirated version is written by Anthony Burch

I was thinking about this the other day. One of the solutions i thought of was selling the game in parts, as in the single player would maybe cost 10-20 dollars which would be low enough that even pirates may not mind paying for it, and then having the online portion cost the remaining price. so like 30-40.

Issue would be that it may not stop pirates as well as making purchasing the game awkward.

I let the pirates get on with it. If the game is good, the pirates will go on to promote how good it is which could lead to people actually buying it.

If there's anti-piracy software that stops them getting the game in the first place, they're not very likely to pay full price for it either.

The majority of people purchase the game anyway, and it's silly to count piracy as a loss since it's not actual theft.

Look at how Blizzard is with their IPs. WarCraft would've been great but they decided for false epicness and the fact that they don't know what to do with the lore is mortifying. The fact that they retcon and do shit all over the series is mortifying. And StarCraft and Diablo? Both started out really nicely, only that then someone wanted to turn the cold war/space frontier coolness into a generic shitty space opera in the first's case and the latter being turned into from a gothic horror into rainbows and not-WoW.

And that's not only the case with Blizzard.

This did not work for ArmA 2. Explanation:

They sold DLC for A2. But the game relies on communities all having the same content so they can play together. The solution was to offer high and low res models of DLC stuff. If you bought it you got the normal stuff. If you didn't buy it, you got janky low res models from 1999.

Result:

Everyone bitched about how bad the game looked and had to be told every day that they needed to buy the DLC to have regular models. They were playing with DLC content for free and were using the free versions. Every time a new person started playing ArmA 2 without the DLC they bitched and said the game was ugly until someone told them why.

They did not repeat this experiment for ArmA 3. Instead they let you ride in DLC vehicles and shit like that but you couldn't 'use' them (fire weapons drive the vehicle et cetera)
