Deus Ex isn't pretentious. It actually does explore the themes it brings up and integrates them into the plot.
Now the plot is ridiculous, the characters wooden and 1 dimensional, there's plot holes galore and sometimes literal magic has to be employed to make things work. But it's not pretentious.

I start the game, and some old guys are talking about some boring shit. Something about a plague, I guess. The only cool part was when they were talking about me being a supersoldier.
My hopes were dashed as soon as the game started. Considering I'm a "nano-aug" (what the fuck does that even mean?) the fact that I die in a handful of pistol shots is shitty.
Guns and melee in this game are both broken. It takes forever to line up a shot and bullets do laughable damage.
I couldn't even bear to finish playing the first level. Fuck this game, and fuck /v/ for calling this turd a great game.

The point is that you can only use poor weapons. If you use the crowbar, you will find yourself virtually always using it. It is powerful enough to one hit MIBs and MJ12 commandos to the back, while the baton will take dozens of hits.

Except half of them aren't problems. You don't even need augs to complete the game, certain weapons being better than others is normal for a game, and is not all that relevant when you don't even need to use any weapons at all for 90% of the game, there's nothing wrong with the "upgrade system" (assuming he meant the skill system) other than swimming and environmental resistance not being the same thing since you don't ever actually need high levels of anything.
The voice acting isn't great, that's true, and whether you find the pacing satisfactory is always going to be personal taste.

Deus Ex is a good game but much like System Shock 1 and System Shock 2 it requires multiple playthroughs to be enjoyed to its fullest. There is little to no handholding in these types of games and you can fuck yourself over easily with the wrong upgrades.

I'm playing the game for the first time now, I've gotten to the raid on the EMP generators. Is the Taser/crossbow that good? It seems fucking terrible considering the crossbow takes a while to go off, and the taser seems like bad baton.

Tranq bolts suck, the regular bolts however are silent and will kill in one shot with a headshot (unlike the stealth pistol).
The prod isn't free like the baton, but it will stun guys in case you fuck up hitting their sweet spot for a 1hko and unlike the baton it's powerful enough to knock out UNATCO troops and MJ12 commandos in on shot.
