The aztecs didn't sacrifice their own people, at least not usually. Aztec sacrifice was built around something called "Flower Wars", which were pre-arranged battles they had with neighboring kingdoms and city states they didn't control where, as tribute, they would participate in these arranged battles, and then the aztecs would take prisoners when it was said and done, and then prisoners is who the aztecs sacrificed. The other kingdoms took prisoners too, as pretty much all religion in mesoamerica was pretty closely related in the same way roman and greek mythology was.
