Exactly this. The cast is fine, they explicitly signed on because they loved the originals.
Despite the shitshow, they all signed an agreement to not say any negative shit about their flick no matter how bad they knew it was. It's why besides the black actress putting up a small bit of resistance on social media about the movie and then going silent, none of them have said virtually anything regarding the movie.
The script is HORRENDOUS. Every scene in the movie is basically Paul Feig pandering as poorly as possible to women. Besides "has ghosts", it's not at all like Ghostbusters.
Ghostbusters was a movie about business - some people taking their unique knowledge and applying it practically, going through all the trials and issues of starting up a company and earning a living. It was interesting to see them put everything they had into their business, make ends meet, advertise, take on the simplest, dirtiest jobs, face opposition from bureaucracy and all sorts of legal bullshit, and eventually succeed upon the completion of a big job. The ghosts were just the background dressing for the setting. The Zuul and Gozer stuff didn't even come into the movie until very late in.
Ghostbusters 2016 is from nearly the beginning "evil ghost man wants to take over the world". The plot is ghosts and the ladies happen to have the tools for the job (nearly everything is handed to them early on and soon after the ghosts start shit, everyone is on board with the girl busters), so throw in a whole bunch of irrelevant situations full of "COMEDY" to fill up the running time until they have the final showdown with the big bad in the end.
