Somewhat, but at the same time, it often does apply. Some games are well designed and fun to play, but because of expectations set up by previous games in a given franchise, don't mesh well with the playerbase.

I found Star Fox Adventures to be a perfectly competent 3d action adventure title, but it certainly wasn't Star Fox as people knew it. I feel it would've been better received if it was a new IP, Dinosaur Planet, as originally envisioned.
