I view many older PC games as pretty bad because they've completely rejected their responsibility to design well paced levels with checkpoints/autosaves and have instead just thrown in a manual save system to save them of so much hassle, but which in essence completely puts the responsibility of creating challenge for the player on hte player himself, where the player has to actively hamstring himself when he could as well be saving all the time.
