Is Dragon Quest 7 3ds better than the ps1 version?
>>
>>345353425

Probably, but it's still gonna be an exceedingly long game with kind of a dull start. I like DQ but I wouldn't recommend VII if it's one of your firsts.
>>
From what I've heard in almost every way. Pacing is better, class system is better, even adding lots of different things to make the game a much more enjoyable game to play.
>>
Yes.
Only thing to keep in mind is that they changed the intro (it's shorter now)
>>
>>345354004
It's actually much shorter and much less annoying with the puzzles.

People are saying they're changing the story for the western release
Is that true?

>>
>>345355684
There's no word of story changes.
>>
>>345355684
They never done it yet so I don't know why this would be any different.
>>
>>345358264
Isn't NoA publishing it? They did change #FE's story, and I think they changed Bravely Second's too, so there is a precedent.
>>
>>345359994
Making edits to dialogue isn't changing the story.

But altering an entire chapter is, fag.
>>
>>345359994
They also published DQ6 and 9 and there wasn't any changes to the plot.
>>
>>345360558
Those all came out before they went completely nuts with this shit.
>>
>>345353425
its better because its portable.

They generally haven't made too many changes to the DQ ports.
>>
>>345360248
What did they "alter"?
>>
>>345360772
Yep. NoA only recently started changing things in their games. They NEVER had a history of that ever.
>>
>>345361048
The whole premise of the chapter, undermining its impact by changing Tsubasa's fear of showing skin into her being camera shy.

>>345361268
Ah yes, I remember when nintendo was on a content cutting spree during the DS era. Oh wait, no, I don't, because they weren't.
>>
>>345355684
>>345360248
DQ doesn't try to target pedophiles like Atlus does. No changes needed.
>>
>>345361432
>Ah yes, I remember when nintendo was on a content cutting spree during the DS era. Oh wait, no, I don't, because they weren't.
Name me a game with sexualization in a game published by Nintendo. People like you LOVE to talk about how NoA has gotten worse except for the fact that they has always been this way.
>>
>>345361432
That's not "changing the story" but okay.
>>
>>345361713
Bayonetta 2, which came out right before they started going deep on this shit. Wow, that was easy.
>people like you
I bought and enjoyed the censored version of #FE and it's my GOTY by far, just like it was going to be before they butchered the fuck out of it. I'm just telling you you're getting your hopes up for something that's obviously not going to happen. DQ7 will be censored even if it's completely benign and you need to get over that now and accept it.
>>
>>345362281
Bravely Default and Fire Emblem Awakening came out before Bayonetta 2.
>>
>>345362516
They barely did anything to Awakening, and I'm still not sure what they did to BD. This shit started to get really bad with Xenoblade X, those were just buildup.
>>
>>345362771

Same with Bravely Default, barely anything. Some bikini that weebs were going to fap to.
>>
>>345362771
>remove titty slider, slightly cover up Lin's bikini, and alter a Fundoshi are REALLY BAD

Wait, are you talking about the name changes that ended up not changing really a goddamn thing?
>>
>>345362771
>started to get really bad with Xenoblade X
The changes they made to Bravely Default were literally the same as the changes made to Xenoblade. They've also been doing this since the 90's.
>>
>>345353425
Is 3ds version even out yet?
>>
>>345362956

People just now notice it because we have the internet. Before, it didn't really make much of a difference.
>>
>>345362942
The titty slider is the big deal here, idiot. It was the first thing they genuinely cut for no good reason at all, at least they had some excuse for covering up Tharja's ass in that DLC. Seriously, what else did they even do to Awakening?

Let's talk about this game. Are you having fun so far? Post parties.

>Godhand, Samurai, Duelist
>>
>>345362974
It's been out in Japan for like five years.
>>
>>345362771
NoA has always been doing it. Bayonetta 2 was a once in a lifetime thing and most likely was NoJ telling them not to do anything because of Bayonetta 1. X major change was not allowing you to see a 13 year old girl in a bikini and the breast slider. NoA has been fucking with their games since 1985. You are a fucking moron that think something like this is new or only jumping on the bandwagon.

Look I wish NoA didn't do as much localization as they do but that's how they have always been doing things. So either accept it or stop playing Nintendo games.
>>
>>345363240

>>
>>345363386
>Telling me to accept that it's happening
>When I'm telling you to accept that it's going to happen to Dragon Quest
What exactly are we arguing about here?
>>
>>345363162

What excuse was that exactly? Tharja was of legal age, it's just an ass. They're both pointless changes made because NoA is prudish. That being said, it doesn't ruin the experience. Only for people who play these games for tits and ass only. It's a shame they're not in, but realistically they're not deal breakers and it's stupid to have a big fuss over them.

#FE I can kind of see, because they did remove a lot, an awful lot.
>>
>>345363240
>Only give us the third game in the trilogy
Fuck you Sega. It's weird how I seem to love most games from Sega but Sonic. I never understood the appeal of Sonic when it was never that great. However games like Phantasy Star was always fucking amazing.
>>
>>345363693
>I never understood the appeal of Sonic when it was never that great
Poor kids who never had a SNES and were stuck with it.
>>
>>345363386
Literally the only egregious move was removing the boob slider. Everything else is irrelevant.
>>
>>345363834

Eh, I had both a Sega and SNES, I liked Sonic just fine. The originals were fun and fast paced platformers. Sonic's transition to 3D wasn't good though.
>>
Haven't played the PSX version, but I liked the 3DS version, and from a big list of changes I've read, it sounds quite a bit better for the most part.

>>345355529

From the small amount of footage we've seen, we've seen one character who has an accent so far, and it was pretty light. Can't say for sure how the full game will be.

The argument started about them changing the plot. NoA makes things less sexual but never really touch plot. The worse DQ will get is most likely changing Puff Puff but even than all the games had it.

I was just saying what changes there was not whether it was right or wrong.
>>
>>345363528
Fun JRPG
>>
>>345364139
I'm not saying it was bad, but if you grew up with a SNES you had objectively better platformers to play.
>>
>>345363678

>Only for people who play these games for tits and ass only

Speak for yourself, not for others. Censorship ruins things for some people, even if they don't care about what was censored. For those sorts, it's the principle they disagree with, and for some people that can be enough to ruin one's fun.
>>
>>345364278
Then they should probably just not play videogames at all, because it happens before the public even sees it half the time.

Also, more in Japan.
>>
>>345364040
>>345364139
I just never enjoyed Sonic. One thing is he always went too fast (even one game you ran past the screen so didn't know what to expect). And some of the pacing was just off. It went from really fast to just dead stop. And the controls never felt right for some of the platform it wanted you to do. Maybe it's just me but I never felt Sonic was ever really great. And it makes me mad that Sega feels the only thing that people want from the is Sonic when PSO2 is stuck in Japan.
>>
>>345364418

>before the public even sees it half the time.

Well it can't bother you if you don't know about it.
>>
>>345353425
Dragon Quest is a pretty boring serie, try the PS1 one before you dive in. It's mostly just 3DS fans really desperate for some RPGs because they console has barely any decent games.
>>
Man, I disliked IX so much. That game had nom personnality, it felt so bland.
>>
>>345364278

If they had principal they would stop buying games all together and just pirate them. Those of us that buy vidya are always compromising our principals.
>>
>>345364810
Yeah having a silent protagonist in a JRPG only really works if you have a good party to give the game character.
>>
From /vr/, apparently pun names are back.

Ruins = Shrine of Mysteries
Fishbel = Pilchard Bay
Rexwood = Ballymolloy
Engow = Emberdale
Orph = L'Arca
Dharma temple = Alltrades Abbey
Mezar = La Bravourve
Sim Town = The Haven
Monster Park = Monster Meadows
Bard =Troubadour
Deja Sword = Sword of Roamers

Also Loomin is believed to be Nottagen.

Looks like puns are back. VII is one I haven't played yet and I might potentially just stick with the PS1 version, I'll wait for more info though.
>>
Serious question from someone who has never played DQ7 and plans on playing it once it hits 3DS:

Is there a lot of "monster training" in this game? If so, is it a crucial part of having a good battle party? ala DQ5? I'm terrible at training monsters and I hate it
>>
>>345365154

>Ruins = Shrine of Mysteries

That one is actually pretty accurate to the Japanese name.

>Sim Town = The Haven

I don't remember it being called "Sim Town", I thought it was just the Immigrant town, but I may have forgotten.

Most of those don't look that bad.

>>345365597

Nope. You get human party members. You can use monster hearts to turn them into monsters I believe, but I never used that feature.
>>
>>345365154
They should give Maribel Jessica's attributes, if you get what I'm saying
>>
>>345365154
Who cares.
>>
>>345365154
Most of those are fine to me. I honestly like the puns. It really was DQ9 that felt like they overdid it at times. Its really the accents in DQ4 that I hated while all others toned them down so I can enjoy the game. So to me I'm still as excited for DQ7 as I did when they first announced it.

>>
>>345367015
>People just worry about having a translation as spotty as DQIV
That's really the problem game. Whenever anyone talks about something iffy about any of the other DQ games they try to talk like it's on the same level as DQ4. DQ4 might have been the worse DQ localization anyone has ever done. And you can tell someone over at SE saw how badly it was and made it so it wasn't as badly handled again. Yeah there's accents and other things but nothing on the same level as DQ4.
>>
>>345367260

In 8 you can make a monster team, but they're not mandatory. It's just part of a mini-game where you have a party of monsters fight each other. You can call them out to fight for you though and they'll be your meat shield for some turns.
>>
>>345367484

>SMTIV Apocalypse and DQ7 in the same month

shit
>>
Anyone been to Hyper Japan?

Are they using MIDI or Orchestrated?
>>
>>345367260

You can catch certain monsters and use them in an optional arena (you'll need to clear the S Rank in the 3DS version if you want Morrie) but you don't need to do it to beat the game. It kinda sucks anyway since you can't control your monsters at all, you're helpless, forced to watch them do retarded shit like never heal or waste all their MP on small fries. Though generally if you just get the best monsters available, that'll be enough to get you through them, though some luck is needed.
>>
From what I remember reading, they removed large chunks of the game to make it shorter. That alone is enough to make me not buy it.
>>
>>345367568
>>345367748
gracias. too bad it seems 8 has been delayed til 2017, barring some sort of surprise Nintendo direct
>>
>>345367672
I've heard it's confirmed midi.
but that's not a terrible thing to me, since the orchestrated music in the japanese version is chopped up to hell anyway. I'd rather have the full theme in midi than a chopped up orchestration that ends and loops before even half the theme plays.
>>
Might as well ask this here. I'm pretty new to DQ, been afan for about a year after deciding to try them being a big fan of the mother series. I keep hearing VIII is one of, if not the best but it looks dull as fuck to me. I've played I-V so far and from what I know I-VII either improved or changed their battle systems.

I- first game

II- gives you party of characters, characters have different roles and abilities.

III- Class system allowing you to create your own party, encourages replayibility.

IV- Given eight characters, now must decide what party combination is best for the current situation, added emphasison plot.

V- Monster collecting.

VI- Job system

VII- Took VI's job system and added refinements.

What does VIII bring to the table? From what I've seen you just have a generic party of the hero, muscle, mage, and healer.

Dragon Quest is a pretty conservative series imo
If you're expecting huge innovations related to gameplay, you're expecting wrong.

Each game has a few additions but that's it, part of the charm is exactly the minimalists things.
>>
>>345368403
Alchemy Pot and Skill Tree.

Personally what makes DQ8 such a wonderful game is how simple they made things. Everyone was trying to make their games so complex but most games just felt like it just brought the games down. DQ8 however made everything simple and easy to do so you spend less time fiddling with different stats and other things and instead focus on the actual exploring.
>>
>>345369085

>The Alchemy Pot is your typical "put two items in to get a different one" device.

And since alchemy is instant in the 3DS version, you can use it to make a couple million gold in like, a couple hours since there's one item you can make that never drops in value over time.
>>
>>345369373

Oh don't get me wrong, the minimalistic style is great but in my experience I appreciated how each one was at least a bit different. I wasn't trying to bash on VIII or anything, I'm sure it's loved for good reason, was just curious as it looks pretty standard from the videos I've seen.

They're re-translating the game instead of using the PS1 dialogue.

Also they apparently changed the game to have monsters on the field instead of random encounters?
>>
>>345370195
Playstation was popular as fuck and it was DQ, honestly it doesn't seem that popular over there. Awhile ago famitsu did a top 10 poll for each console and I believe every DQ made the list other then I and II(I remember III and IV were chosen, not sure on the sfc/gbc versions), VI (least popular game in the series) and VII didn't appear on their respective systems. From what I can tell III, IV, and V are the popular ones in Japan.

>>
>>345370912

Oh yeah, you're right.
>>
>>345370880

At the very beginning it is usually good to grind a bit to get some levels and money. Later in the game you will have more gear, spells, and characters to strategize with.
>>
>>345370880

In the NES ones? Definitely. After that it's not too terrible. VIII has a bit of a tough beginning I've heard. I didn't grind when I played through it through, not that early on anyay.
>>
>>345370195
DQ7 took an unusually long development time, enough time for the hype to build up, remember Ocarina of Time?
>>
>>345362771
>This shit started to get really bad with Xenoblade X

No, this shit started getting ATTENTION during xenoblade x, especially here on /v/. BD had about as much, if not more censorship than Xenoblade X. I don't think either had all that much censorship to begin with.

This shit has been happening for years, and the reason its more prominent now is because NoA has been more open into importing certain games that never would have seen the light of day in the US 10 years ago.
>>
Alright, so the only DQ games I've played are 5 DS and 9.

What do you guys do when you get into a new town? Grind for money to replace all of your characters' gear or just get what you can? Feels like you never truly have enough to deck out everyone in the best shit in DQ when you first get to a town.
>>
>>345371985
I grind out cash early on when I reach a new town but as the game goes on I stop doing that and just buy what I can and move on.

I just do a few replacements here and there, as long as my tank has enough def to take minimal from melee enemies he can protect the mage

a shield warrior makes the game a WHOLE lot easier

Depends on the gear and how expensive, if its a big upgrade then I'll either buy it or grind gold for it if its not stupidly expensive.

DQ7 has a lot of annoying level balancing issues. Seem when replaying it for the remake Horii and others were shocked at how hard the game actually was and how badly the pacing was.

There's a lot of stuff they changed in the remakes like making the bosses a bit easier by taking away the anti magic barrier and other things.

I do my best to avoid grinding. It just isn't satisfying if I grind for it.

I mostly see how far away from a level up or how much money I need for new gear. If I just need to beat a couple of enemies I might do that but more times than not I just shrug and continue on without grinding. I do however deposit my leftover gold just in case something bad happens.

That's usually what I do. Grinding for money at the beginning and then later on just get fed up and start getting what I can.

>tfw I trivialized DQ5 by grinding the casino and getting the Metal King Sword as soon as possible

I regret it looking back

I usually only fully upgrade the hero and see how easily I can beat the enemies of the area.
It really depends though, sometimes I'll just feel like grinding a lot
