Just as a Metal Gear title it lacked it's own personality, the OST was dead, there was too much quiet time between the action and there was a severe lack of story/exposition/experiences to really discuss to keep the game alive.
It was a massive disappointment, but still a good game on the fundamental level.
I'd still play Solid2 and Solid3 over it any day.

The game is pretty much a Metal Gear Solid buffet with how much there is to do but not a lot of it has a ton of substance to it.

The fact that people complain that MGSV isn't deep, but at the same ask for a ''NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO'' Darth Vader scene for Big Boss.
I think that's why Kojima just dropped all the subtlety in MGSV out the window, and made it all obvious as fuck, because he reads all this, and he thinks everyone is stupid, so he writes story for these kind of people.
I didn't like MGSV's story, but I think the fact that he had no issues with going along with the plan of pretty much taking away one of his best soldier's life just so he could escape, or the fact that, contrary to Solid Snake, who was heavily anti-Metal Gear, actually builds Metal Gears, just shows that he isn't that much of a good guy.
Thing is, we saw things through his perspective, so he doesn't seem that bad.

It should have been tons of smaller locations, about the size of ground zeroes. Each one with an objective or two, while keeping it diverse. We could have had more then desert and jungle shit, we could have DD operate on a world basis. Winter areas, forest areas, ect. That being said, I can definitely agree with the criticism that TPP didn't need to be Open World. Personally, I would have prefered it if they essentially just made it a bigger Ground Zeroes. MGSV would have been much better if it had a third chapter, that is alot of people's main gripe with the game. However, for me personally I found just everything to be so underwhelming, and the twist just felt like a stab in the back. I loved MGS2 back in the day and didnt care about playing as Raiden because his involvement with the storyline, key word being involvement. Venom snake, aka random doctor man has essentially no backstory, no real character to him, no past life, no nothing. I wanted to hear big boss go crazy and badass, Venom snake is virtually silent the whole time. We expected future members of foxhound to make an appearance, big boss to have some actual snake-ness to him, (or better yet, to be the actual big boss), and a plotline to wrap up all the loose ends. Instead we had to listen to a tonne of audio tapes, endure this character who is totally unique to the series in the fact he has no character, likewise with vocal parasite dude who i didnt give a FUCK about, Quiet who adds nothing to the story other than a pair of tits, the unexplainable and unnecessary return of volgin, baby liquid snake and psycho mantis stealing and piloting a metal gear (yet alone knowing eachother), a metal gear which is more advanced than practically any other mg in the series, holy shit - what a mess. The gameplay is solid, the best the series has ever seen. But the open world is too vast and the new mechanics beg for indoor exploration. Don't get me started on the multiplayer..
The biggest disapointment of all however, was just that. The disappointment of this game. It could have been so so much more, it promised so much more, and the trailers were leading us to believe we were due for a masterpiece!
What we receieved was memorable, but for all the wrong reasons. Made this old man cry, what a crappy end to the series. :(

I don't know how people don't see that the entire game is about what you want to do.
You give Venom his real name and face.
You choose your buddies, you choose your PMC's emblem and name, you build your army, you build your equipment, and you go on the missions you choose, with the way you prefer to attack.
The entire game was about making you part of the story, even though it ended up badly due to being unfinished.
It's the complete opposite of MGS2.
MGS2 was about making you think Raiden was your avatar, but slowly you just discover that he is his own person, that he has his own past, which was pretty fucked up, even Snake tells him to choose for himself, and throws away the dogtags where you are supposed to write your name.
This one was about making you the central part of the story.
You could interpret that as a ''Thank you'' letter from Kojima, by making you Big Boss.
If you didn't like it, however, that's a different matter.

If anything significant happened story wise, I missed it. Venom's "reveal" wasn't even important and didn't impact a fucking thing.
Quiet was pointless. She could've been replaced by a DD Combat Unit person with more varied usefulness and a deeper connection to your recruits. With DD tech even the invis and super speed could've been explained away somehow. Maybe Huey built an exo or something, who knows.
Paz's arc was the only notable and most interesting/impactful thing through the whole game in terms of story. Tends to happen when you take established characters and, I don't know, USE THEM (see Ocelot).
Gameplay was fine, but plagued by movement issues and/or what I like to call "new age animation syndrome", where your character will be climbing, standing, doing things in general and your controls will feel unresponsive for even just a moment or two, which is very annoying. But when it works, it works well. Except D-Horse, he handles like a bathtub.
Freemium research design and FOB system was garbage, the latter being forced especially. It would've worked great as a separate mode or an opt-in system or something but instead you get the privilege of waking up the nest morning, let alone returning a week later, to find several thousand resources missing.
I called this one of the worst things I'd ever bought back in October after it was over. Playing through it again now after the anger has subsided shows it to be a pretty good game with some awful fucking story and equally bad main mission structure. The whole thing feels like it has no flow, just walking and shooting your way to new objectives, with the occassional MB visit in between. This game has convinced me that there is such a thing as "too much freedom", or maybe it's just all directionless. Maybe they go hand in hand. Either way, I'd call it asolidgame but close to the bottom for MGS games.
