I usually play a mix of both. I'm spontaneous when it comes to character creation, usually. Unless it's something like a fighting game with crazy customization, then I just recreate dozens and dozens of characters just to see who I can make.
In other games, like RPGs and shit, I sometimes recreate myself and makes the choices I would make, I sometimes recreate a character from another game (regardless of whether they fit the setting or not), and I sometimes create something original, actually putting in the effort to make a hero for this story and taking their role seriously.
It also sometimes depends on the art style and the gameplay. If one sex's model is just objectively better than the other, then I'll pick it instead. Like if the males just look fucking retarded, or the females are harder to hit due to their hit boxes, I'll pick a female character.
Who I play as really comes down to whatever I feel like in the moment.
I'm also a straight guy who crossdresses if that's relevant. It definitely encouraged me to buy shit like Tomodachi Life.
