the NES and PC Engine were just too stronk and had incredible influence. They also gobbled up a noticeable amount of market share before the MD was even a thing.
If you want to go even further, Japan has always liked RPGs and the MD had very little. Sure they tried and made a few 10/10 experiences but the chinks had already decided the console's fate. Meanwhile folks over here in the US and Europe loved the thing. Wouldn't be surprised if that made Sega a little mad.
