IV is a great game but VI is better in pretty much every way. Rydia is probably better than any of the girls from VI though.

FFVI is just a poor imitation of IV.
The whole forced splitting your party up into groups for dungeons is really monotonous, and even though characters have set """classes""" like in IV, magic and shit like Master's Scroll/Genji glove make using each character's class specific "thing" pretty much irrelevant.
IV, with it's less customisation, ends up ironically having more variety in its gameplay due to this. It's also a far more challenging game and has way better bosses, plus 5 party members at a time kicked ass.
Another aspect of VI that annoys me is the huge cast, it's so big every character is fighting for screen time and they all end up feeling kind of diluted. They did a good job for what they could pull off but the development for each individual character is lacklustre and feels rushed.
I really wanted to love these characters and know more about them, and spend more time with them but the game is too focused on ticking boxes then moving on.
VI is still excellent though.

Having played FF4 for the first time very recently and having no nostalgia for it, I can say without bias that it's a decent game with heavy flaws.
The writing is terrible, for one thing. Yeah, it was an early effort by Square, but the dialogue borders on cringe with how meaningless and stereotypical it feels. Nobody has anything interesting to say. Nobody feels like their own character, they're just a cardboard cutout of a trope.
The way that party members just come and go as they please bugs the shit out of me. You never know who you're going to have with you for the next leg of the journey until the very end when your team is finally concrete. The game can't make up its fucking mind about whether or not Kain is on your side, and every time someone joins the party they get injured no long after and have to sit out.
Combat is great though, especially in the PSP version. I don't like how it feels like everyone is fighting for their turn, though, and that enemies get to break the rules. You'll have three party members with actions queued up, and four enemies will decide "no, fuck you, we get to go first. Woops your team is dead lol."
I also feel like the OST is one of the weaker ones in the series. The boss theme and overworld are great, yeah, but otherwise it's a little forgettable.

I feel like FF4 just plays everything too safe to really be worthwhile. It's boring to me. I don't really find any part of it really exciting and while I do remember it very well that's mostly due to how many times I played it. The plot is standard fantasy fair and while it's inoffensive it's not really exciting. If the presentation was better I could love it more but right now I just can't really get more than a lukewarm meh for it all.
On terms of gameplay I rather the broken faster pace battle system of FF6 or FF5 than the super safe and, in my opinion, boring FF4. If I could customize the characters in some fashion at all I think I'd have a better time with it. As it stands characters are extremely static and in the original release you didn't even have access to the more exciting characters.
I'm not saying FF4 is a bad game I just don't find it as personally appealing as most of the other FF games. I'd rank it fairly low in the series.Top fucking tier waifu material though.
