Why though? Shouldn't they do bigger more meaningful towns? How about instead of those shitty trainers being all around the routes they are instead in their houses in bigger towns?
Instead most of these trainers appear to be homeless since most towns are between 2-8 houses at most.

Because keeping old tropes and conventions isn't a bad thing. Tons of JRPGs have large areas these days, making a more '90s style JRPG with regard to overworld helps you stand out.
That, and I'm biased against large cities in Pokémon because, out of the three times they attempted big sprawling cities, one was okay (Castelia) and the other two (Lumiose and Mallville) were complete shit.

Sure, I'd like to see it actually. It would be nice if there was more depth to the world. Every object having flavor text like old school point and clicks, items hidden everywhere more than the obviously placed pokeball or rock on the map, environments that promote real exploration instead of walking A to B. Fleshed out villages and cities would be really nice to see.
Unfortunately that is never, ever going to happen. Pokemon's target audience is still young children who suck at games but like the brand and cartoons. They've got to appeal to the lowest common denominator first.

Because realism isn't the goal of the games. There are a few NPCs that give nothing but flavor text, but most are either pokemon trainers or advice giving NPCs. Having hundreds of NPCs that don't talk to you or give worthless advice is a waste of resources.
Any game can be comfy if you have a friend or two playing along with you.
That's what made X's launch so goddamn fun because I knew at least people playing it like crazy during that first week. Shit was fun as fuck during campus lunch shifts.
AlsoBlack2/White2 are best games, but Platinum and Heargold/Soulsilver are also top tier tastes if those are you favorites
