Explain to me why fighting games always have the most delicious character designs? Don't get me wrong, I like them but the whole genre involves them getting beat up, injured and sometimes even killed. What did they do to deserve this?

Because maining a character in a fighting game means alot. You'll likely spend hundreds if not thousands of hours focusing on that character, so being distinguishable and pleasing to the eye is a much bigger factor.
fighting games don't require as much development time compared to other genres. With that said, more emphasis can be put on the character roster which is the main appeal of fighting games
