Dues Ex starts out so fucking badly, I honestly cannot name a worse opening level in history. I almost dropped it like 2-3 times and only /v/ calling me a fucking casual babby when I made whinge threads kept me at it.
After you get a decent amount of Augs the game suddenly flips into gear and becomes actually good. But you might still have a bad taste in your mouth from the first 3 levels for a while before you realize it's getting fun, Lebedevs Jet is a turning point when it starts to get good, and Hong Kong is when it gets goat.

The stealth never gets any more than the same line of sight stealth that everyone complains about in other games and even if the shooting gets more accurate it's still never good. Some parts are cool because of how many different paths there are but I still never got to the point where I thought the game was amazing or even that good.

I sympathize with you because I felt exactly the same way at first. I hated the game and was only continuing it because it was a classic and I wanted to finish it so I could legitimately shit on it all over /v/. But I ended up really liking it in the end.
It's been years since I last played it though so I can't remember where the ship mission was. But the fact is the second half is much better than the first. Also with regards to stealth, I would not consider Dues Ex stealth at all. I hated it at first because it was the same shit line of sight stealth and shit guns. Once I switched to melee only I rarely ever used guns again, and I maxed out jump and just started pouncing around the level and running at 100m/ph playing it like I was some demi god of warfare. I only did minor stealth when I wanted to scout out an area before massacring everyone.
Getting the run fast and jump high augs are the best because the level design really makes good use of veticality and there is so much fun stuff you can do. If you are gonna use guns and just try to sneak around tranqing people I can see it being boring and tedious as fuck.

I thought rockstar where going to buck their trend at first. The relationship between John and Bonnie in the beginning is legit good and I was very interested in it. But then after the level where Bonnie gets kidnapped, suddenly John just forgets about her existence. I was like what the fuck. I was actually angry while playing the game. I wanted to see how Bonnie was after that kidnapping. I wanted to see how John acted around her after he saved her life, like she did his. I don't fucking care about the plot device that was his fucking invisible unseen wife, the game was setting something up between Bonnie and John, for fucking nothing. No pay off. Just a small scene out of nowhere at the end. Fuck that. Really pissed me off.
I got pulled into the Rockstar meme again. The game is just "flavored" dialog from weird characters who are essentially quest givers, half of them and what they say doesn't matter at all, and they will be forgotten about.

Mafia 1 wasn't a GTA clone. It was a linear story which just had an open world for the missions to take place in. I think Mafia 2 was similar in that it was mostly linear though I think the open world aspect was pushed a bit more in it. Not sure about 3.
Far Cry 1 was similar and I don't even know if I would consider it open world. It was linear with large hallways, kind of like Crysis. 2 and up started the open world mission based structure.
The Arkham games are the same, the first game was linear-ish with backtracking and 2 made it open world.

Besides, RDRs map isn't just a boring flat desert. If you had half a brain and even the simplest appreciation for nature you'd see how they actually made a very spot on collage of western nature. Tall trees, great plains, Dies coronas, gaptooth, blackwater, etc. They were all different enough to look beautiful yet still fit with the western setting. Plus, hunting, gathering, bounties, gang hideouts, exploring, horse breaking, there was plenty to do in the map. Not sure what else you wanted.

And no, fuck you, the level design was shit. Where was the canyons and valleys and cliffs. Why wasn't there more travelers and people with carts and stuff riding around. Where is my riverboats. Where is my big ass old wooden bridge to have a battle on as it's about to blow as a train approaches. It was too rare to actually meet anyone. I saw barely any farms or farm animals. I saw barely any cowboys on the range tending to cattle and sheep. Barely any settlings farming their plants. Barely any sherrifs and deputies hunting other outlaws. Barely any military fortresses with garrisons (I know there was one, but not enough).
Gun was a good western map. RDR was a shit western map. Gun was also a fun game as well.

It makes some amount of sense for wide open prairie/desert to feel relatively lifeless and empty. Meanwhile, you have all these other open world games taking place in big cities and, guess what, they feel exactly as lifeless and empty.
That's not to say it's okay either way, though. I guess making a sincerely vibrant and lively open world is too much of a hassle.

Hm... I agree. It had nice atmosphere. But the ending was really predictable, a lot of the missions felt like unnecessary filler(with most of them not really compensating with fun characters or objectives), and the gameplay is just autoaim powered by super magnets and high noon timestop magic easily taking care of everything that moves. It was still a damn good game, but nowhere near the messiah of the whole last gen people make it out to be.
I've yet to play the zombie DLC, maybe I will one of these days.

Stalker's physics are actually cool at times. I think X-Ray has its own physics engine kind of like Cryengine does. You could throw and drop your gun and it would be affected by physics and barrels and other environmental debris would be affected by firefights.
Grenades also actually fragment and cause damage that way and bullets can ricochet.

I know there were travelers but it was so fucking rare. After playing Stalker, RDR was just a fucking disappointment.
Every time you did run into someone it was super scripted, and ussually in the same fucking location too. Fucks sake, every time on the way out of Hennigans Stead there was some random event, either a woman crying for help that was really a trap, or the other shit you said.
It was the same 3-4 things over and over again. Yeah randomly I'd see a guy wandering around too but it was nothing compared to Stalker which was a budget slav game.
All the rest of the shit you said may have technically been there but it was underused. I vaguely remember there actually being a steamboat now but it was just a prop. Compare this to gun which had a proper steamboat mission. I don't think the mines at Gap tooth were used properly either, compared to gun that had a whole boss fight down in the mines.
Everything in RDR either wasn't present, or was but was incredibly underused. Waste of a setting.
