I always presumed that he was the biblical Cain, as it was implied by the story several times that he was immortal. And iirc, that what part of "the mark of Cain" god cursed him with. I remember playing it at a friends house years ago. We beat it because we had the patience of saints. Just creep up to each soldier, use rocks to lure then and then kill them. Some of those lures must have taken like 10 minutes.
