The System Shock remake Kickstarter is at over $1 million now.

What do you think of it so far? What are your hopes and fears for it?

Personally, the demo looks great, enemies and weapons are well modeled and well animated, and with the exception of the enlarged windows looking out to Saturn, the environments are spot-on recreations of the original Medical level.

However I'm a little concerned about the soundtrack sounding too much like BioShock's. Also the item pickup animations in the first room quickly become excessive since there's so much to grab there. Hopefully they get toned down.

Also one of the stretch goals is to essentially backport SS2 game mechanics such as vending machines, weapon crafting, and role-playing skill upgrades, which I don't think will fit well since the original System Shock was not an RPG.

I'm still pretty excited for it though. Can't wait to explore Citadel Station again.

What say you, /v/?

Don't quite get it. I admit, I enjoyed the Monkey Island remasters, but I'd be happier if game developers would go for some innovation, rather than rehashes.

>the industry is so creatively decayed it resorts to literally taking old games, giving them a facelift, and releasing them again for easy money
It's a signifier of how bad the industry has gotten. We need a crash, STAT.
>>
What's System Shock?
>>
I really just want them to fully remake the game. Nothing added, just better graphics, sounds, and voice acting. The combat is fine, and I really don't want them to remove any hardware, but they said they're going to remove sensaround because it's useless. Also, the soundtrack better not be all shitty dubstep, however the intro will be. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uemn79gOxeQ
>>
>>345230461
That's drum n bass, not dubstep. I think they're trying to sound like SS2 there.

I just hope they don't add fucking crafting and stats

Didn't need him any more. Was a few short minutes away from literally becoming a sub-space goddess.

Once she had total control over both vessels, she's got no reason to keep you alive.
>>
>>345238041
Yeah, but why actually go out of your way to kill him when so far he's been loyal to you?
You may no longer have need of him, but killing him seems like a waste of time.
I feel like the game would have been better if shodan makes her ambitions clear now that the threat of the many is gone, and it falls to the player to betray her to save earth rather than the other way
>>
>>345238395
Both SS2 and DX1 would have been twice as good if they had the option to betray vs going with the flow fell upon the player. Even if the game ended short because of it.
>>
>>345238395
>Yeah, but why actually go out of your way to kill him when so far he's been loyal to you?
We are talking about SHODAN here anon, who threat you like shit for the entire game. Its pretty clear she sees you like a bag of flesh (or insect if you like). You are nothing to her
>>
>>345229527

Can't agree about the enviroments. They look good at a distance, but they look fake and mocked-up as fuck in the actual demo.

If they get on that and make it less cardboard and more natural, it'll be good. But the demo wasn't there.
>>
>>345229527
>Also one of the stretch goals is to essentially backport SS2 game mechanics such as vending machines, weapon crafting, and role-playing skill upgrades, which I don't think will fit well since the original System Shock was not an RPG.
That's because they were in Bioshock and that game is all everybody cares about since nobody even remembers System Shock didn't start with 2.
>>
>>345238395

He's a threat. He's the only "free" being remaining on the ships.

She's been jerking your chain the whole time and you're the only person on the ships that can oppose her.

Her intentions are very clear, especially with the inclusion of the delacroix memos: She's going to exert her will against the universe using the Von Braun's sub-space drive and become god.
>>
>>345238704
>That's because they were in Bioshock and that game is all everybody cares
Most people prefer SS2 to Bioshock by a large margin
>>
>>345236495
Spector is a hack that made such garbage as Invisible War and Thief 3. Also Avellone's writing is pretty awful, Planescape has to have one of the most rambling and preachy scripts.
>>
>>345238830

It's PLANESCAPE

The setting has all the though process of "Hey, you know that intro to philosophy course we took in high school? Wouldn't it be cool if we made them all fight? No, not the students, the concepts!"
>>
>>345238635

It's pretty weird that SHODAN still sees things that way, considering though.

For all her technological purity, she was made a chump of by a 0-day wetware nerd in the first game. None of her half-assed cyborgs or full machines came through like he did.

Then the second game, she once again saw the technical superiority of a true human-machine hybrid with mostly autonomous will, beating ass for her instead of against her until the end, and chewing the many and the rogue machines into pulp.

If SHODAN hasn't learned shit from that, she doesn't even deserve to be the villain of this series.

>>345238785
She could have at least waited until she was fully merged and actually had literal god powers before deciding to announce her plan to off you.

>>345241987
>So this is an acceptable practice now?
Yes, paying to own a copy of a video game has been around for a while now.
>>
>>345242115
What do you mean losing revenue? They already got the money for making the game before they even started the development. What revenue is being lost?
>>
>>345242349
Sales revenue from people who would have otherwise purchased a copy at full price if they hadn't funded the game's development.

The point of developing a game is to make a profit, not break even.
>>
>>345242543
>break even
Break even with what? Did they get the money for the game or not? So why would they get more money than what the game development cost?

When you buy a loaf of bread, do you give the baker 2-3 times the price just because?

>>
>>345243324
I don't understand what rationalization is behind "we want 3x money for this" except greed and sociopathy?
>>
>>345243107
Yes, the producer must benefit from his labor or else he's just working for free.
>>
>>345230461
Say what you will about it fitting the game or not, but that song is fucking awesome.
>>
>>345243536
But the producer in this case are the Kickstarter backers who are giving free money for game production.

Normally, the process would be the producer giving a loan to developers for the development of the game, and getting this back when the game is sold.

This was widely lambasted as a terrible horrible process because the evil producer takes all the money and makes the developers do things they don't want and create a shitty game.

KS on the other hand, could have been: developer gets free money, makes game, releases it for free because there is no producer anymore who is jewing them.

However, now they take all the money for themselves. Why don't the KS backers get any money back from the sales, if they're acting as the producer? BECAUSE LOL.
>>

>>345243947

If a company would release their kickstarted products for free after its funded by backers, there would be an incentive for poor people like you to not back something, even at the lowest tier. The way the system is now, people back something and often times they back at the level that gives them the product at a reduced price as a "reward" for backing and then the product that they wanted to see become a reality is now on the market, to be sold to people who didn't back it but might want it. The extra money from sales in the future all go to night dive studios to make more cool projects in the future.
>>
>>345245346
>all go to night dive studios to make more cool projects in the future.

>>
>>345244491

That reason was both games were tied up in IP hell for a long while, so not legally available, and even after that, SS1 did not get on market like SS2 until recently.

Most people just aren't going to jump through hoops to run games that old, unless someone like GOG does the work for them.

I have great hopes for it, but something about the developers doing there own stuff to a remake gets me worried/upset.

I just want a remake of the original, not a Re-imagining. Because honestly at the core, SS1 is fucking amazing, only thing that brings new players down is the UI. Just doing a remake with Update Graphics, UI and Combat/Animation will just do fine. But messing with it cause you wanted to make stretch goals for more money does not settle well with me.

System Shock 2 definitely shows it's rocky production cycle by the later stages of the game, the final level is pretty damn bad.

if they could make Shodan's confrontation/boss fight as amazing as they wanted, with the weeaboo kill bill-esque duel in a dojo or the fighting a giant avatar and more surreal mindfucks, they would be stupid not to. But that takes talent and vision, not just funds.

The models look bad, but the environment still holds up. You should play SS1. Sprites have way more detail than shitty early 3D.ยด, if it bothers you that much,

google a modding guide and look at the one on systemshock.org
it lists a lot of graphics mods and such, skip the music one though

nah
>>

is that the best example you could think of? you can set the keybinding manually

I just want Dark Engine style movement.

If they're bringing anything over from System Shock 2 is should be that.
>>
>>345258551
Obviously it's dated, but not unplayably so.
Just rebind some stuff and fix the UI text scaling and you'll be fine.
Install a balance mod if you want, but the game isn't exactly hard.

This guy irritates the shit out of me

It's global illumination. Why did you expect?
>>
>>345259235
Nigga if you rebind shit it plays just fine.

Only mods you might want are SS2tool, and texturepacks that are faithful.

Weapon remodels are faithful, Enemy remodels are fucking dogshit and the weird polygons are scarier anyways.

Dude you can fucking lean FORWARD in SS2 and Thief, your character has fucking momentum and if you boost your speed too high you can kill yourself by slamming into a wall at mach speed.

If you dont' think that's the tightest shit then get the fuck out of my face.
>>
>>345258551
You can always get the SS2 SHTUP which makes it a lot less dated on the eyes.

The Thief engine looked like ass at the time of its release. LG wasn't putting in the effort for a major engine update for SS2. OTOH, it had amazing audio architecture if you had the hardware for it.

>using the highest setting on the sparq gun
you know for someone who was complaining about the game oogling and ahhing at shit, he never looked at his inventory to see the values for energy consumption & damage numbers.

So why does he hate Chris Avellone? I'm not very familiar with his work, but as far as I know he is one of the most beloved writers in in industry. So what's with the hate? Is he just an edgy contrarian?

Remakes are cash grabs. A bunch of 30 somethings trying to recapture youth with something familiar yet new.

Reading comprehension. I said it brings down players from trying it. Not me.

You're the second-class citizen nigger.

hes a literal human kickstarter goal shoved into every golden age series reboot ks that hasnt produced anything as good as the word he's done previously
>>
>>345261092

It's weird how that works. I kept wondering for a long time if it was just me thinking the enemy models actually worked better without replacing, but clearly it wasn't.

The HD textures are fucking fantastic though. Makes the game look exactly like it should, just crisp and clear.

Hard to know where to stop once you start fucking with the plants and water and stuff though.

Developers seem competent enough, best case scenario we get a game worthy of the System shock brand, worst case scenario we get a new Infinite.
