I played until frigost, celestial bearbarian. All those gimmicks seem silly in theory, but they make the fights quite interesting until you figure out a strategy. Sadly, after that, it's just routine.
It also made it much less appealing to play with people you don't know with the likelyhood they will fuck it all up. If someone fucks up in dragon pig, that's fine it's just one death - if someone fucks up in kimbo, that's an instant wipe.

Two instances from Terraria.
Brain of Cthulhu in Expert Difficulty will create hallucinations that increase in vividness the closer to death it is until you can't really tell them apart, plus it teleports in and out constantly, Phantoon style. The hallucinations don't hurt you and you can't hurt them. The primary way to tell which one is real is because they're all mirrored on your four corners, meaning they all get closer if you get closer to the real one, and they all get further away if you move away from the real one, so you have to judge how they move to figure out which one is real. Or you could just set the real one on fire.
The Lunatic Cultist summons decoys while preparing for a certain attack and, if you attack the wrong ones instead of damaging the real one, it summons out a really strong attack. They have different names and sprites though, with the difference being that the real one has three black pixels for its eyes in a right angle triangle, and the fake ones have four black pixels for eyes to make them look sort of like dummies.
