Neither FO1 or FO2 had that of a serious storylines. They were still kind of cheesy, so if you discover a plothole or something like it, you can brush it off.

Yeah, it would have better if they went with settings common in that era rather than something more deeper like BR. It's one of the reasons I love Old World Blues, it just completely fits the Fallout franchise that Beth envisioned.
Of course, NV has a semi-serious story about cvilization and what it entails, and they managed to squeeze in some really nice "philosophical" dialogue which makes you think instead. So it's definately possible, just not the way Beth did.

The only possible explanation for how fucking stupid the Institute are is that 200 years of inbreeding with a small ass population has created a pack of drooling idiots.
Think of them as "scientist tribals". They have no fucking clue what they are doing, or why they are doing it, and are fucking retarded, but wear lab coats and mimic what they think their scientist ancestors did. Essentially, a cargo cult of science.
Shaun is their director not because of any scientific aptitude or skill on his part, but because he is "the chosen one" who was nothing more than a DNA sample for them 60 years ago. Since Shaun isn't an inbred drooling retard they made him the director of their "tribe".
Of course all of this is trying to play devil's advocate with some made up fanon bullshit.
